NearnessSample

Malcolm Fraser, a former Prime Minister of Australia, was famous for saying, “Life wasn't meant to be easy”. Life in this fallen, sinful world is not easy. It is hard and frustrating. King David’s life before he became King was a constant struggle. His life was brutally hard. Even after he became king, things were not always easy—in fact, things fell apart towards the end of his life. David had lived experience of suffering.
Yet, David always turned to God when things went wrong. He wrote this Psalm after being delivered from his enemies. Whilst David was an expert in suffering and hardship, he was also an expert in seeing God come to his rescue. He knew that God could be relied on. David called on God, and God always delivered.
Meditate on all the words used by David to describe God in this passage: rock, fortress, shield, stronghold, my strength, deliverer, horn (a symbol of strength) of my salvation. What images spring to mind?
The God of King David is our God, too. God is the same then as He is now. He is just as reliable, dependable, and able to help. Call out to God when things are hard. He will hear and He will deliver.
Today, ponder this: Where or who do I turn to when things get hard?
