Dr. Emily Falk is a leading researcher at the University of Pennsylvania. Some of the interesting findings from her research show that social networks and peer influence shape our decisions. In other words, we are not just influenced by what we hear, but by who we hear it from and how our brains process that social context.
Our social circles can reinforce healthy, wise choices or pull us towards harmful ones. This truth was written down a long time ago in the book of Proverbs.
This proverb highlights a quiet truth: wisdom isn’t just taught—it’s caught. When we walk closely with those who fear the Lord, their insights, character, and choices begin to influence us (see Psalm 1:1–3). But when our closest influences lead us away from God’s heart, the result isn’t just stagnation—it’s damage.
Consider King Rehoboam in 1 Kings 12. When faced with a critical leadership decision, he ignored the wisdom of seasoned advisors and listened to his young peers instead. The result? Division and disaster. In contrast, look at Paul and Timothy: a relationship marked by discipleship and shared mission (2 Timothy 1:5–6), where wisdom flowed from one life into another.
So ask yourself: who are the voices shaping your thinking, values, and faith? Are they wise in God’s eyes or the world’s?
Today, ponder this: Who are your closest friends and influencers on your life? Do they point you to Jesus or are they amplifying the desires of the world? Pray that those surrounding you are more like Christ and pray for opportunities to be a Christ-like example in someone else’s life.
