Nearness

DAY 19 OF 62

I once went to a bachelor party where we played laser tag in the bush. It was a lot of fun to run around and pretend to shoot guns; however, it was a sweltering 35 degree celcius day! On top of that, we were required to wear coveralls as part of the safety requirements. Needless to say, we were hot, sweaty and very parched.

After a few hours, we stopped for a break of ice-cold drinks and the feeling of inhaling the drink was overwhelming. My whole body felt alive and restored. I gulped down the drink and then could not wait to have another one.

This is the kind of longing that David describes in Psalm 63:1 (ESV): “My soul thirsts for you”. It’s a thirst that exists when circumstances have stripped everything else away. He more than wants God’s presence—he needs God’s presence.

All too often, we tend to be content with the temporary pleasures of life. They can consume us, distract us and make us forget about the beautiful presence of God. But just like little children, what we really need is the loving arms of our Father.

David describes the beauty of God’s satisfaction as having his soul “satisfied as with fat and rich food” (Psalm 63:5, ESV). It is true communion with God that satisfies and fills our soul. No matter our circumstances, or what other pleasures that surround us, it is only time in the presence of God that will truly restore us to fullness of life.

A bit like a cold, cold drink on a hot day.

Today, ponder this: Start today with the prayer: “God, I seek you and I come into your presence. Thank you for who you are. Fill my soul with your love and grace.”

In a season shaped by bold questions and honest wrestling, Nearness offers a daily pause to remember that God is not distant—even when answers feel elusive. This companion to the Ask Anything sermon series walks through key selections from Psalms and Proverbs, revealing a God who sees, hears, and loves us without needing to erase the hard places. Each devotion gently speaks into the tension, offering wisdom and comfort. God is unfailingly good. His presence is unwavering. We don’t need every answer—we need the One who stays.
