Sharing Your Faith as a Mentor
Does the thought of sharing your faith by being a mentor terrify you? Do you think of all sorts of excuses not to take on such a responsibility? And even if you did, how would you know it was helping someone, especially if you never got to know or hear about the outcome? But what if, years later, you heard the person you mentored share with you the impact you made in their life? Would it have been worth it?
Each day at CQ, the volunteers gathered for a time of devotion and prayer. We learned about what the kids were being taught and how we, too, could apply those principles in our own walk with the Lord. We are never too old to learn something new, right?
On day four, one of the leaders, who worked in the kitchen where hot foods are prepared, shared with us. As a backdrop, Thom and Suzanne have been coordinating and ordering the food for this week-long event for twenty-five years. This will be their last year.
“I’m sharing this with you from my heart,” Jason began as tears welled up in his eyes. “Thom has been and is my mentor. I began volunteering at CQ ten years ago. After three years, I was feeling like a drop of water in the ocean. When I shared my feelings with Thom, he said, ‘At some point, I am going to retire.’ I immediately jumped in and said, ‘Maybe we could change places!’
“Thom looked at me, and with all sincerity said, ‘You have a lot to learn.’ Here we are, ten years later. Thom is retiring, and it looks like I will be taking his place. It’s big shoes to fill, and I’m hopeful he’ll at least stop by and visit next year to make sure everything is running smoothly!”
Jason continued by sharing that his son, who years earlier was one of the campers at CQ, is now following in his father’s footsteps. He not only serves with his dad, but he’s also taking on new responsibilities each year and developing great leadership skills. Thom mentored and helped Jason grow, and now he is passing it on to his own son.
You [Timothy] have heard me [Paul] teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.
2 Timothy 2:2 NLT
It seemed like wherever I served, or whenever I sat down at a table during CQ, someone had a beautiful story to share that brought so much encouragement to me; it resulted in this devotional!
Prayer:
Lord, help me be open to receiving what others have to share about their lives that will help me live mine. Then please help me to live it out so that my life will have an effect on others, especially those in my own family. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Do you want to go the extra mile?
- Pray and ask the Lord if there is someone He wants you to mentor.
- Start praying for that person.
- Keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities. Are there mentoring programmes you can join at your local church or community center?
- Talk to the Lord about it, He will lead you perfectly. Let Him speak to your heart as you write down His thoughts in your journal.
