What should I do?

Life is a series of decisions. A job offer presents itself, but we’re not sure it’s the right fit. We could move to another city, but we also like where we are right now. Someone shares an opportunity with us, and we’re curious but also cautious.

We might sometimes think, I need a guide. In other words, we need someone to help us know what to do and where to go. Thankfully, God is ready and able to direct us. Here are just a few examples:

In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling. (Exod. 15:13 NIV)

The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land. (Isa. 58:11 NIV)

He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. (Ps. 23:3 NIV)

These comforting words from Psalm 23 show us that we have a Good Shepherd as our guide. We won’t suddenly know every step or all the answers. But we can trust that somehow, someway, we’re going to end up where we need to be.

Yes, there may be distractions and detours. We might wander off and get ourselves lost for a bit. But someone is always going to bring us back and make sure we reach the destination.

Having God as our shepherd and guide changes our role. Instead of carrying the burden of figuring everything out, our job becomes to trust and faithfully follow.

Good Shepherd, thank you for being so wise, loving, and faithful. You have promised to be with me every step of the way. Amen.
