Day 4: Sweeter Than Honey

"More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb." (Psalm 19:10, NRSV)

The psalmist knew good honey. Not the processed stuff we squeeze from plastic containers, but wild honey; complex, gathered from mountain wildflowers and eucalypt forests. The kind that makes your mouth water just thinking about it.

That's how he describes God's commands. Not as bitter medicine we choke down because it's good for us, but as sweetness we savour because it satisfies something deep in our souls.

We've turned God's guidance into a burden instead of a feast. We approach scripture like a tax form instead of a love letter. We've forgotten that God's ways aren't restrictive rules but life-giving wisdom.

When I read "You shall not murder," I don't hear a cosmic killjoy trying to ruin my fun. I hear a loving father saying, "Don't destroy what I've made beautiful." When I read "Love your neighbour," I don't hear impossible duty but incredible possibility.

TODAY: Before reading scripture, ask God to help you taste its sweetness. Read slowly, looking for one insight that delights you rather than rushing through for coverage.

PRAYER: God of sweetness and treasure, forgive me for the times I've seen your ways as burdens rather than gifts. Awaken my spiritual taste buds to savour your goodness. Make your truth so sweet to my soul that I hunger for more of you each day. Amen.
