Restoring Eden: How to Grow Spiritually Without Growing Weary

DAY 5 OF 5

Glory to the Father

In Mark 11:12–22, Jesus approaches a fig tree that looks full of life from a distance. Its branches are covered in leaves—a sign that it should also have fruit, but when Jesus reaches it, He finds none. Though it looked healthy on the outside, at closer look it was fruitless and probably unable to produce fruit at all. So, Jesus curses the tree.

This moment wasn’t really about the tree. It was a powerful illustration of what happens when our lives appear spiritually vibrant but lack true fruit beneath the surface.

Jesus is not impressed by appearances. He is after what’s real. The fig tree had leaves that gave the illusion of fruitfulness, but it was empty inside. The same is true for us when we go through the motions—attending church, saying the right things, even serving—without being truly connected to Him.

God is not interested in us performing for others or trying to “look the part.” He desires hearts that are abiding in Him—hearts that will naturally bear good fruit over time. Real fruit can’t be faked. Eventually, what’s inside will be revealed.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to appear fruitful—busy, spiritual, impressive—while neglecting the deeper work God wants to do in us. But Jesus reminds us: it’s not enough to look fruitful—He wants us to be fruitful. That's what brings true glory to God.

This kind of fruit comes only through staying connected to Jesus. When we abide in Him, He produces fruit in us that glorifies God and blesses others. However, when we settle for appearances, we’ll miss the abundant life He invites us to live.

So today, take a moment to reflect: Are you focused more on appearances or on abiding? Ask God to do the deeper work in your heart so that your life will bear the kind of real, lasting fruit that only comes from Him for Him.

Reflection: What kind of fruit is growing in your life? How can you focus more on abiding and less on performing, so that your fruit brings glory to God?

About this Plan

Restoring Eden: How to Grow Spiritually Without Growing Weary

Too often, we strive for perfection, try to hold everything together, and still feel like we’re falling short. Deep down, it’s because we long for what was lost in the Garden of Eden—a life of peace, purpose, and closeness with God. The good news is: God, the Master Gardener, has always had a plan to bring us back. In Restoring Eden, Bible teacher Christina Patterson shows how to grow a flourishing life in Christ—by God’s grace, not your striving.
