The Gospel of JohnSample

Get Up and Walk
In John 5, Jesus approaches a man who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. That’s a lifetime of pain, waiting, and disappointment. When Jesus asks him, “Do you want to be healed?” it’s more than a question about physical ability—it’s an invitation to believe. Then Jesus speaks three powerful words: “Get up.” And the man, who had spent nearly four decades unable to move, stands to his feet—healed.
Jesus didn’t just bring healing; He brought responsibility. He told the man to pick up his mat and walk, to carry the weight of this new beginning. In the same way, when Jesus meets us in our brokenness, He not only restores us but also calls us to live differently.
For me, it was at a youth worship service where I encountered the Lord. Before that, I was spiritually dead—going through the motions without any real life inside. But in one moment, it was like I woke up. Everything changed. I didn’t fully understand it, and my friends noticed something was different, even if they couldn’t put it into words. But I knew. I knew Jesus had touched my heart.
Maybe you’re in a place right now where you haven’t “gotten up” yet. You’re still waiting, still hoping for that moment of change. I want to encourage you: Jesus sees you. He hasn’t forgotten you. Your healing—whether emotional, spiritual, or relational—may not come in the way you expect, but it starts with faith. It starts with a response.
Respond to God’s Word
- Take one step toward healing – Whether it's forgiving someone, asking for help, or opening your Bible again, do one thing today that moves you closer to Jesus.
- Reflect on what’s been holding you down – Is it shame? Doubt? Fear? Bring it to Jesus in prayer.
- Believe that change is possible – You may not feel different yet, but God is always at work. Keep trusting Him.
Jesus is still speaking to hearts today, still saying, “Get up.” And when He calls you, there is power in His words to bring you to life.
