Covenant Renewal: Behind the Text
It shouldn’t be a surprise that we have evidence of the very place where Joshua built an altar. The two mountains where the covenant renewal took place stand today as monuments to God’s faithfulness.
Mt Ebal
In 1980, Adam Zertal and his team excavated Mt. Ebal. There, Zertal found a singular installation that exhibited two occupational layers. The earliest layer dated to the Late Bronze Age (around 1200 BC) and exhibited clear signs of cultic (i.e., ritual) activity. In its next phase, dated to the Iron Age (following 1200 BC), this site was expanded significantly and continued to function as a significant cult site. Zertal ultimately concluded that he had found Joshua’s altar spoken of in Joshua 8:30-35. However, Zertal’s conclusions were met with severe backlash.
