The Book of Galatians With Kyle Idleman: A 6-Day RightNow Media DevotionalSample

Day 5: Galatians 5
If you could do anything you wanted, with no barriers holding you back, what would it be? Many of us dream of having that kind of freedom. We might even think that that’s the kind of freedom Jesus offers us once we begin following Him. He broke down the barriers between us and God—doesn’t that mean we can do whatever we want? In today’s teaching, we’ll see what it really means to live out our freedom in Christ.
Reflect
There are many competing definitions in our world when it comes to the idea of freedom. How would you say the world defines freedom? How do you define it?
As Christians, we can use our freedom in one of two ways: we can spend it on our own passions and desires. Or we can pursue God’s purpose for our freedom, which is loving service to others. When exercising your freedom, which of these two choices do you most often pick? What opportunities do you have to use your freedom to serve others?
As you reflect on what you’ve learned in this teaching, where do you find yourself most in need of freedom?
Respond
You have been set free to live free, but not to spend your freedom on yourself. True freedom is found in humble, loving service to others. Love fulfills the Law. It’s easy to get hung up on a to-do list of external works, but we cannot be what God wants us to be on the outside without first experiencing His transforming power on the inside.
Choose one person in your life to serve this week. Ask God to strengthen you as you meet that person’s needs, and to show you the joy of using your freedom for the good of others.

About this Plan

If someone asked you to explain the gospel, what would you say? Writing to the Galatians, Paul made it clear how easily we can be tempted to turn toward fraudulent gospels, especially those that teach we can earn God’s love through our works. In this six-day devotional study, Kyle Idleman dives into the book of Galatians, one that contains some of the clearest explanations of the gospel in the New Testament. True freedom is found in surrender, not self-dependence. Because our gospel is not one based on our works, but faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
