The Shepherd and the SheepSample

Day 4) Belonging
Three Things We Have In God’s Family
1) Goodness
When we place our faith in Jesus, we are adopted into God’s family (Ephesians 1:5), becoming inhabitants of His house. In God’s house, we are promised “goodness,” which is exactly what it sounds like—good things from Him. The world can feel like a lonely place, but as Christians, we find true comfort in recognizing that our adoptive Heavenly Father gives us true belonging!
2) Mercy
Grace and mercy are often used interchangeably, but understanding their difference is critical. Grace is receiving what we do not deserve, and mercy is not receiving what we do deserve. God’s grace is on full display through His goodness, which we already discussed, but He is also merciful in that He does not require us to pay the penalty for when we wander in our faith. Instead, Jesus, the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), paid the penalty for us on the cross.
3) Forever
Our world is filled with temporary things. They may comfort our lonely hearts for a moment, but God is the only one who offers lasting connection. The psalmist describes this with phrases like “all the days of my life” and “forever.” Not only do we belong in God’s family, but we belong in His family permanently!
Big Idea: In God’s family, we experience His goodness, mercy and the promise of eternal belonging. As adopted children of God, we are welcomed into His house forever, where we find true comfort and unshakable security.
Let’s Think About This:
Question 1) What are some of the “good things” God has done for you? Why is it so important for us to understand that God has adopted us as His children?
Question 2) Do you ever feel lonely? How can remembering the cross give you hope in those moments?
Question 3) What are some temporary things in which we often seek comfort and belonging? Who in heaven are you most excited to see when you pass from this life?

About this Plan

Do you find yourself running but getting nowhere—striving with little to show for it? For thousands of years, multitudes of people just like you have found comfort in the beautiful words God spoke through David in Psalm 23. As a young shepherd who would grow up to slay an unbeatable giant, run from a king who wanted him dead, become king himself and sin so grievously that he murdered to cover it up, David knows a thing or two about trusting God, even when it’s hard. As we’ll discover, rest for our souls comes through surrender, not striving!
