The Shepherd and the Sheep

DAY 2 OF 4

Day 2) Comfort

What Does God Use To Comfort Us?

1) His Presence

The “valley of the shadow of death”' symbolizes the pain and difficulty all of us experience in this world. We live in the valley between two mountaintops—God’s perfect environment in the Garden of Eden and the establishment of His Kingdom on earth when Jesus returns. While we are still alive, the presence (or shadow) of death is seen in difficulties such as sickness, sadness and broken relationships. However, despite this dysfunction, David declares, “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” We do not need to fear in the valley because the Creator of the valley is always present with us!

2) His Rod

In David’s era, shepherds carried one of two large sticks to aid in their duties: the rod and the staff. The rod was primarily used to defend the sheep from predators, such as wolves. God, as our Shepherd, promises to defend us from the enemy, Satan, and from any weapon he may form against us (Isaiah 54:17).

3) His Staff

The rod was used to protect the sheep from external threats, while the staff was used to protect them from internal ones. Sheep are prone to wander and get themselves into trouble, and the staff had a hooked end that allowed the shepherd to pull them back from danger. As followers of Jesus, our biggest obstacles are sometimes ourselves. Thankfully, God uses correction through conviction, as well as other external forces, to draw us back to Him.

Big Idea: In the midst of life's difficulties, God offers comfort through His constant presence, His protection from external threats and His loving correction. As our Shepherd, He leads us through the valley, defending us from the enemy and gently guiding us back when we stray.

Let’s Think About This:

Question 1) Why is it important to know that God is present with us in the midst of our struggles? How can this bring us comfort?

Question 2) Can you think of a time when God protected you or someone you know from something that was out of their control? What was that experience like?

Question 3) In what ways are you prone to wander from God? What are some guardrails you can establish to help keep your focus on Him?

About this Plan

The Shepherd and the Sheep

Do you find yourself running but getting nowhere—striving with little to show for it? For thousands of years, multitudes of people just like you have found comfort in the beautiful words God spoke through David in Psalm 23. As a young shepherd who would grow up to slay an unbeatable giant, run from a king who wanted him dead, become king himself and sin so grievously that he murdered to cover it up, David knows a thing or two about trusting God, even when it’s hard. As we’ll discover, rest for our souls comes through surrender, not striving!
