24-What Do You Do? Knowing what God has done for us, it's now our turn to fulfill our duty towards Him by living sacrificially. But how do we do that exactly? We're told in the verse above...by using the gifts that God has graciously given to us.
Within the Christian life, there's this subject that we commonly refer to as "spiritual gifts." If you're not already familiar, this is referring to the fact that God imparts supernatural abilities to each believer. Once "in Christ," they are given a spiritual skill-set that they didn't have "outside Christ." They're given a spiritual gift, and those specific gifts are listed for us here on Romans 12:6-8, as well as in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10.
Spiritual gifts are many and varied, but they all have something in common. Their purpose is to benefit the Church as a whole. As each member of the Body of the Christ uses their particular gift, the rest of the Body is strengthened spiritually. So God gives these gifts to us, but we're to use them for the sake of others. That's how we live sacrificially.
Paul actually alluded to this way of life at the very beginning of Romans when he wrote that he desired to visit them so that he could impart a spiritual gift to them (Romans 1:11). What was he referring to? The very thing he's writing about now in Romans 12:6. He's referring to using his spiritual gifts for the sake of blessing others. He's talking about living sacrificially.
Maybe that's a new way of looking at life for some of us. Perhaps we've always viewed the subject of spiritual gifts as optional, or something for the paid professional. But God's Word says differently. All of us, every member of the Body of Christ, has a gifting as well as a responsibility to use that gifting. So what have you been given, and what do you do with it?
Think about it...
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
Knowing what God has done for us, it's now our turn to fulfill our duty towards Him by living sacrificially.
Think about it...
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
