DAY 199 OF 365

Our avenger

Vengeance. If you want to sum up Psalm 79 with a single word, vengeance would be a great word to use. From start to finish, it's a prayer and plea for God to avenge the crimes committed against His people. In context, this Psalm is referring to the numerous armies that had invaded and pillaged Israel.

But the application in Psalm 79 doesn't end there. When we view things through a New Testament lens, we see that our adversaries aren't found in flesh and blood; they're spiritual in nature. These immaterial enemies include sin, death, and Satan. And as we explore the rest of the New Testament, we find that God has avenged us of each of these foes.

The penalty of sin was defeated as Jesus died on the cross. Our insurmountable debt was cancelled by the Son of God's perfect sacrifice. And by doing so, we were set free from having to serve sin's penalty of everlasting death.

Death was the next adversary God avenged for us. When Jesus was raised from the grave, it was a picture of the resurrection life that awaits each and every one of us who have placed our faith in Him. Because He lives, we shall live also.

Lastly, Satan's authority over our lives was broken once we were redeemed by Jesus' blood. At the fall of man, we came under the devil's cruel and unforgiving ownership. But at the cross, we were purchased back and are now owned by the Merciful Master.

The prayer for vengeance in Psalm 79 has been answered in our lives, and on an infinitely greater scale than we ever could have imagined.

Awesome Avenger, we praise you for taking vengeance on the enemies of our soul and for giving us a new life we can now spend serving You.

When we view things through a New Testament lens, we see that our adversaries aren't found in flesh and blood; they're spiritual in nature.

Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
