Elohim Previously, we saw that from time to time the Bible addresses God with a name that was in wide cultural circulation during Old Testament times. But now, we move onto a name that's exclusive to scriptures, a name that no other ancient culture used to identify their deities: Elohim. This is the most common Hebrew word used to identify God in the Bible, and it's absolutely essential that we understand its significance. Elohim is actually a plural noun, and that's a big deal because although the Hebrew scriptures don't go in depth to describe the triune nature of God, this plural noun (which is used to identify Him more than any other word) is like a flashing neon sign that says, "God is one, and yet there's something plural about His nature!" Again, this is a word that's completely exclusive to the Hebrew scriptures. No other people group or religious sect referred to their god as Elohim. And it points to a concept that isn't found outside of the Bible. God is a compound unity; He is Triune, one yet three. No other religion makes that claim, not even today. Why? Because it's something that defies human logic, and no man-made religion would or even could come up with such a concept. Only a God who truly transcends our earthly understanding would identify Himself as Elohim; we never would. So we see that even God's name, and His most common name at that, not only reveals an important insight into His nature (the Trinity) but is also evidence of His existence. Elohim...it's more than just another name. It's that ever-present flashing neon sign that appears over two thousand times in the Old Testament, always pointing to God's unique nature and His undeniable reality. Think about it...
