Gospel of John Student DevotionalSample

In John 8, Jesus finds Himself in a heated discussion with the Pharisees, a group of religious leaders who believe they are the keepers of the law. During this conversation, Jesus makes a crucial point: those who don’t believe in Him cannot truly know God. Because people refuse to believe in Him, they will face serious consequences for their sins (John 8:21-30).
One of the main ideas Jesus discusses in this passage is freedom. He tells those who believe in Him that they will be “set free.” This initially confuses the people because they claim they have never been enslaved. However, Jesus isn’t referring to physical slavery—He’s talking about being trapped by sin. In John 8:34, He says:
"I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin."
Jesus is showing us that sin has a powerful grip on people’s lives, and without God, they cannot escape its control.
As the conversation continues, Jesus tells the Jewish people that they can be set free if they open their hearts to God. But He also points out their contradictions, as they are actively rejecting Him (John 8:34-38). They claim to be descendants of Abraham, yet Jesus challenges this belief. He says that if they were truly Abraham’s children, they would follow his example and accept the truth He brings. Instead, Jesus declares that they are neither God’s children nor Abraham’s. He goes as far as to say that they belong to the devil because they reject the truth and refuse to listen (John 8:40-45).
This moment is powerful because Jesus exposes their hypocrisy—they claim to follow God, but their actions prove otherwise. He further emphasizes this by asking them:
"Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin?"
No one can answer because they are not truly attuned to God’s message. Jesus concludes by saying:
"Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God."
This statement forces them to confront a tough realization: if they genuinely sought God, they would recognize that Jesus is speaking the truth.
Through this passage, Jesus shows that faith isn’t about social status, family background, or religious knowledge. It’s about having an open heart that is receptive to God’s truth. The Pharisees’ refusal to listen to Jesus illustrates that knowing about God and truly being connected to Him are two very different things. Those who sincerely seek God will inevitably recognize and accept the truth that Jesus offers.
