Don't Miss This! Lessons From the Minor ProphetsSample

Habakkuk & Malachi: Faithful in the Waiting
Habakkuk and Malachi spoke to God's people in times of frustration and uncertainty. Both prophets wrestled with questions about God's justice, His timing, and the faithfulness of His people. Their words remind us that when we cannot see God's hand, we can still trust His heart.
Habakkuk's message begins not with a declaration but with a complaint. He looks at the corruption, violence, and suffering in Judah and asks, "How long, O Lord, must I call for help? But you do not listen!" (Habakkuk 1:2). God's answer is unexpected — He is raising up the Babylonians to bring judgment. This only deepens Habakkuk's confusion: Why would a righteous God use an even more wicked nation as His instrument? But Habakkuk reaches a place of deep trust through his dialogue with God. He declares that even if everything around him falls apart, he will still rejoice in the Lord (Habakkuk 3:17-18).
Malachi, writing much later, addresses a different kind of crisis — spiritual complacency. The people had returned from exile, rebuilt the temple, and were waiting for God's promised blessings. But when life remained difficult, they grew apathetic. They dishonored God with half-hearted sacrifices (Malachi 1:7-8). Priests became corrupt (Malachi 2:7-8).The people questioned whether it was even worth serving the Lord (Malachi 3:14). Yet in their faithlessness, God declares, "I am the Lord, and I do not change" (Malachi 3:6). He calls them to return to Him, promising that those who remain faithful will see His blessings (Malachi 3:10).
The New Testament echoes this truth: "Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise" (Hebrews 10:23). Like Habakkuk, we may not always understand God's ways. Like Malachi's audience, we may grow weary in waiting. But God's faithfulness never wavers. Even when circumstances seem uncertain, we can trust that He is working, He is just, and He always keeps His promises.
Father, we confess that waiting is hard. When we don't see answers, when life feels uncertain, help us to trust that You are still in control. Strengthen our faith to declare, like Habakkuk, that even in hardship, we will rejoice in You. Keep our hearts from growing cold like in Malachi's day—let us remain faithful, knowing that You are always faithful to us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
About this Plan

The Minor Prophets are some of the most overlooked books of the Bible — yet their messages are just as urgent today as when they were first spoken. These prophets called God's people to repentance, justice, faithfulness, and hope, revealing His heart amid crisis and change. Though written long ago, their words still resonate, challenging us to trust God, seek His kingdom, and live faithfully. Over the next six days, we will connect these ancient prophecies to the New Testament and our daily lives, showing that God's character has never changed — and neither has His call to His people.
