Don't Miss This! Lessons From the Minor Prophets

DAY 4 OF 6

Jonah & Micah: Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment

The stories of Jonah and Micah present two sides of the same truth: God is both just and merciful, and He calls His people to reflect that same mercy.

Jonah was a reluctant prophet. When God sent him to the great city of Nineveh to warn of impending judgment, he fled in the opposite direction (Jonah 1:3). He knew that if Nineveh repented, God would show mercy. Jonah wanted no part in it (Jonah 4:2). Nineveh was the capital of Assyria, a brutal enemy of Israel, and Jonah longed for their destruction, not their salvation. Yet, despite his resistance, God used Jonah to bring about one of the greatest revivals in history. The entire city repented, and God spared them (Jonah 3:10). But rather than rejoicing, Jonah sulked, revealing that while he was willing to receive God's mercy for himself, he struggled to extend it to others.

On the other hand, Micah boldly declared God's expectations for His people. Prophesying during a time of corruption and injustice, Micah denounced the leaders of Israel and Judah for their oppression of the poor and their false sense of security in religious rituals (Micah 3:9-11). But alongside his warnings of judgment, he proclaimed a profound truth: "The Lord has told you what is good… to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). Unlike Jonah, who resisted God's mercy, Micah called the people to embody it — to live justly, to extend kindness, and to remain humble before God.

The New Testament echoes this lesson: "There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you" (James 2:13). Jonah resisted this truth but Micah embraced it. Which one are we more like? Do we love mercy only when it benefits us, or do we extend it freely, as God has done for us?

Father, You are a God of justice and mercy. Teach us to reflect Your heart — to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before You. Forgive us when we withhold grace from others while gladly receiving it for ourselves. Soften our hearts to love as You love, to forgive as You forgive, and to extend the same mercy that has been given to us. In Jesus' name, Amen.

About this Plan

Don't Miss This! Lessons From the Minor Prophets

The Minor Prophets are some of the most overlooked books of the Bible — yet their messages are just as urgent today as when they were first spoken. These prophets called God's people to repentance, justice, faithfulness, and hope, revealing His heart amid crisis and change. Though written long ago, their words still resonate, challenging us to trust God, seek His kingdom, and live faithfully. Over the next six days, we will connect these ancient prophecies to the New Testament and our daily lives, showing that God's character has never changed — and neither has His call to His people.
