Only Jesus Gives Living Water

As we continue to explore the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman, we want to draw our attention to the dialogue they shared. When asked for the “living water” of which he spoke, Jesus essentially derails the conversation! He suddenly started to identify areas of deep pain in the Samaritan woman’s life; she had been repeatedly subjected to rejection and disgrace, not only by her previous husbands, but also by the community to which she belonged (evidenced by her drawing water alone, at an obscure time of the day).

Was Jesus sabotaging this conversation? Was he being harsh? No. By calling out her wounds, Jesus was demonstrating the beautiful measure of his acceptance and grace. He is making it clear that his living water isn’t being offered in ignorance of her struggles, it is being offered regardless of her struggles. Her deep rejection, her mistakes, her doubts and fears are no obstacle for Jesus.

This short interaction reminds us that Jesus’ invitation to receive his living water is open to any and to all. We need not seek to improve ourselves before turning to him, we just need to seek him and allow him to transform us. By the end of this conversation, the Samaritan woman has experienced this so powerfully that she becomes a carrier of the hope of Jesus to the very community that had abandoned her. Because even a little time with Jesus can change everything.
