Grief’s Unexpected Journey: 15 Comforting Devotions After Losing Someone You LoveSample

Spiritual Shoes
Think back to your childhood for a moment. Do you remember running barefoot through the house or the front yard without a care in the world? Or maybe there’s a little one in your life today who does that very thing. Kids aren’t famous for taking precautions; they’re just enjoying the moment, and who cares whether that involves shoes or not?
Now imagine going on a hike—leaving behind the familiar and venturing out into the woods. Would childhood you be instructed to cover your feet? Wouldn’t you stop your own child or grandchild today, reminding them to lace up their shoes because they’re headed into unfamiliar territory? In the same way, we can get comfortable with the barefoot business-as-usual in our lives—familiar tasks, familiar feelings, and even a familiar connection with God each day. We know our way around, and surprises or struggles aren’t welcome. But what happens on the tough trails and in the hard times? We need a covering, and God stands ready to provide it through His Word. He has given us all we need to meet any obstacle, to deal with any discouragement, to rise above any despair. As the psalmist reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105 NLT).
The more of that Word we take in, the more protection we will have from the rocks and thorns that await us on this journey. Of course, there is much to feel and overcome, but we are free from lasting hurt; we don’t have to surrender to the struggle; we can find refuge among God’s promises; we can know that this path—tough as it is—leads to Life because He goes before us. Consider challenging yourself to spend some time in God’s Word each day. Look up His specific promises and remember they are a part of His love letter to you and the world He created. Be encouraged, even if the road is rough right now; He is here to light your way and soften your path. May you sense His presence today.
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Word. May I hold tight to all Your promises.
