Steps to Salvation: A Simple Guide to Sharing Your FaithSample

Day 2: The Cost of Sin
Scripture Reading: Romans 6:23
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." – Romans 6:23
Yesterday, we established that all people have sinned and fall short of God’s glory. Today, we take the next step by understanding the consequences of that sin. Romans 6:23 makes it clear that sin is not just a mistake or a bad habit; it carries a price. That price is death.
The word "wages" means payment. Just as we earn wages for our work, our sin also earns us something. Sin is a killer. It kills our relationships with other people and earns us separation from God, both now and for eternity. God is perfect and has asked us to live in perfection as well. When we sin, there is a wage, a penalty, a punishment for sin. Because God is the source of all life, to be separated from Him is death. The wage, punishment, or penalty for sin is death.
The Hope in This Verse
Thankfully, the verse does not stop at the bad news. While the wages of sin is death, God offers us something entirely different. Eternal life is not something we can earn; it is a gift. Unlike wages, which are deserved, a gift is given freely. Jesus Christ made this gift possible by taking the punishment we deserved.
When sharing your faith, this is a critical moment to help someone understand both the weight of sin and the incredible grace of God. The good news does not seem as urgent or necessary without the bad news. But without the good news, the bad news leaves us in despair.
Your Story
Think about a time when you felt the weight of sin. Maybe it was guilt, shame, or a feeling of separation from God. How did it affect you? How did God’s grace change that? Write a few sentences about that moment and how you understood that salvation is not something you could earn but something God gave freely.
Prayer Prompt
Lord, I know that sin leads to death, but You have given me eternal life through Jesus. Thank You for making a way for me to be restored to You. Help me share this truth with love and clarity so others can see your incredible gift. It is in the name of Jesus we pray, amen.
