Lessons From the Book of Ruth

DAY 4 OF 7

At the start of the story, Ruth, a Moabite woman, lives a seemingly happy life with her husband in her home country, close to her family (Ruth 1:3-19).

Then her fate, and that of her family, changes, and she turns from a married woman into a poor, childless widow who has to scavenge her food in a strange land (Ruth 2:2-3). On top of it all, her country of origin would have made her an outcast because Israelites looked down on Moabites.

The odds were stacked against her. Ruth had plenty of reason to shrink back into a shell and simply live in obscurity with her family, as her sister-in-law did (Ruth 1:11,14). Ruth, however, refused to let her past define her or hold her back. She chose to serve God, and she believed there was still life left for her to live.

The lesson learned here is that when we trust in God, our past is not our final destination, and our circumstances don’t have the final say.

From a childless, foreign widow, Ruth became a rich man’s wife, a mother, and an ancestor of Jesus. Ruth was famous in the land that once considered her an outcast, as a daughter-in-law who was better than seven sons (Ruth 4:15).

Do you have something that seems to be a defining factor in your life? Are you a widow(er), a divorcee, childless, a criminal, a foreigner, sick, poor or illiterate? Remember that you’re not defined by who you are, but by Who’s you are… You are a child of the Most High!

“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as he is.” – 1 John 3:2
