The Way of the MarksmenSample

Day 2: East and West:
Today, we focus on two interconnected responsibilities that make up the final directions on our Marksmen compass: valuing family (East) and upholding ministry (West). These two directions are not in competition but work together to create a life that reflects God’s design for love and leadership.
East represents the value of family. Our first ministry begins at home. Whether as husbands, fathers, sons, or brothers, we are called to lead and nurture. Ephesians 5:25 reminds us, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” This kind of love is sacrificial, patient, and focused on building a strong foundation. Leading your family spiritually means passing on faith to the next generation, creating a legacy of love and discipleship.
West represents upholding ministry—the work of serving others and advancing God’s Kingdom. Ministry is not about recognition or personal success; it’s about service. Jesus taught this clearly in Mark 10:45: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” True ministry begins with humility and a heart for others.
Balancing family and ministry is essential. Paul warns in 1 Timothy 3:4-5 that effective ministry starts at home: “He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)” A man who neglects his family while focusing on ministry misses his first calling, and one who avoids ministry entirely misses the opportunity to reflect God’s love to the broader community.
Take time today to reflect on these questions: Are you investing in your family with intention and love? Are you serving your church or community with humility and purpose?
When family and ministry are balanced, they create a powerful testimony of God’s design for leadership. Strengthen your relationships at home first, and then step into your calling to serve others. God has equipped you for both roles, and by embracing this balance, you’ll reflect His love in every area of your life.
