F.L.O.W: Getting Unstuck Through the Power of Surrender a 5-Day Devotional by Dr. Avril Occilien-Similien

DAY 3 OF 5

FLOW in Love

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13:34-35 (NIV)

Just a fair warning—the message in this devotional may sting a little. It certainly made me say “ouch” as God revealed why I was stuck and could not move forward with what He was calling me to do. I wasn’t flowing in love.

What is love? The Bible tells us in 1 John 4:7 that “love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” You see, love is not just an emotion. It reflects who God is. When we fully embrace God’s love, it empowers us to live out His purpose and transforms us by shifting our focus and perspective.

Also, God’s love is not passive. As seen in John 3:16, God demonstrated His love by giving His Son for our salvation. If love is active, flowing in God’s calling also involves giving of ourselves, just as He gave us. This selfless love often requires sacrifice, which should humble us and fill us with gratitude for His grace. It means stepping out of our comfort zones and giving our time, talent, prayers, or support without expecting anything in return.

Getting unstuck starts with shifting our focus from ourselves to others. Philippians 2:3 reminds us: “In humility, value others above yourselves.” When you align your heart with God’s love, those excuses fall away because it is no longer about you but God’s love flowing through you.

Maybe you hesitate to step into God’s calling because you feel inadequate or unsure. But the truth is, loving others God’s way gives you the courage to move forward. Jesus showed us true love is not about what is convenient or easy. It is about laying down your life, your fears, and your doubts for the sake of others. His love compels us to act; when we love this way, we allow God’s power to flow freely.

Here’s a challenge: if you’re feeling stuck, ask yourself, “Am I loving others as Christ has loved me?” because sometimes, the barrier to stepping into God’s calling is a heart issue. As you continue this faith journey, I encourage you to let love be your guide. Don’t let fear or doubt hold you back. Flow in love, and trust that as you love others, God will equip you for the journey ahead.

Reflect and Journal:

  • What are some areas of your life where you may not be loving others as God loves you?
  • Read Psalm 139:23-24. Quiet your heart and mind and write down what God reveals to you.

Pray:

Lord, I thank You for Your sacrificial love for me. Search my heart and reveal any selfish ways. May I reflect Your love to others. Help me to flow in love as I release all doubt and fear into Your hands. In Jesus' name…Amen!
