 <div class="label">22</div><div class="s1">Balak Summons Balaam</div><div class="p"> 1Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab and camped along the Jordan across from Jericho.</div><div class="p"> 2Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, 3and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread because of the Israelites.</div><div class="p"> 4The Moabites said to the elders of Midian, &#8220;This horde is going to lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.&#8221;</div><div class="p">So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, 5sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River, in his native land. Balak said:</div><div class="pm">&#8220;A people has come out of Egypt; they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. 6Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination. When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said.</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;Spend the night here,&#8221; Balaam said to them, &#8220;and I will report back to you with the answer the Lord gives me.&#8221; So the Moabite officials stayed with him.</div><div class="p"> 9God came to Balaam and asked, &#8220;Who are these men with you?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10Balaam said to God, &#8220;Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message: 11&#8216;A people that has come out of Egypt covers the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then I will be able to fight them and drive them away.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12But God said to Balaam, &#8220;Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13The next morning Balaam got up and said to Balak&#8217;s officials, &#8220;Go back to your own country, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14So the Moabite officials returned to Balak and said, &#8220;Balaam refused to come with us.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15Then Balak sent other officials, more numerous and more distinguished than the first. 16They came to Balaam and said:</div><div class="pm">&#8220;This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me, 17because I will reward you handsomely and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse on these people for me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18But Balaam answered them, &#8220;Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the Lord my God. 19Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20That night God came to Balaam and said, &#8220;Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Balaam&#8217;s Donkey</div><div class="p"> 21Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials. 22But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it to get it back on the road.</div><div class="p"> 24Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam&#8217;s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again.</div><div class="p"> 26Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat it with his staff. 28Then the Lord opened the donkey&#8217;s mouth, and it said to Balaam, &#8220;What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29Balaam answered the donkey, &#8220;You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 30The donkey said to Balaam, &#8220;Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;No,&#8221; he said.</div><div class="p"> 31Then the Lord opened Balaam&#8217;s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.</div><div class="p"> 32The angel of the Lord asked him, &#8220;Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me.#22:32 The meaning of the Hebrew for this clause is uncertain. 33The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 34Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, &#8220;I have sinned. I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 35The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, &#8220;Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.&#8221; So Balaam went with Balak&#8217;s officials.</div><div class="p"> 36When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the Arnon border, at the edge of his territory. 37Balak said to Balaam, &#8220;Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn&#8217;t you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 38&#8220;Well, I have come to you now,&#8221; Balaam replied. &#8220;But I can&#8217;t say whatever I please. I must speak only what God puts in my mouth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 39Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth. 40Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and gave some to Balaam and the officials who were with him. 41The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal, and from there he could see the outskirts of the Israelite camp.</div>

 <div class="label">22</div><div class="s1">Judgment Against Wicked Kings</div><div class="p"> 1This is what the Lord says: &#8220;Go down to the palace of the king of Judah and proclaim this message there: 2&#8216;Hear the word of the Lord to you, king of Judah, you who sit on David&#8217;s throne&#8212;you, your officials and your people who come through these gates. 3This is what the Lord says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place. 4For if you are careful to carry out these commands, then kings who sit on David&#8217;s throne will come through the gates of this palace, riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by their officials and their people. 5But if you do not obey these commands, declares the Lord, I swear by myself that this palace will become a ruin.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6For this is what the Lord says about the palace of the king of Judah:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Though you are like Gilead to me,</div><div class="q2">like the summit of Lebanon,</div><div class="q1">I will surely make you like a wasteland,</div><div class="q2">like towns not inhabited.</div><div class="q1"> 7I will send destroyers against you,</div><div class="q2">each man with his weapons,</div><div class="q1">and they will cut up your fine cedar beams</div><div class="q2">and throw them into the fire.</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another, &#8216;Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?&#8217; 9And the answer will be: &#8216;Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="q1"> 10Do not weep for the dead king or mourn his loss;</div><div class="q2">rather, weep bitterly for him who is exiled,</div><div class="q1">because he will never return</div><div class="q2">nor see his native land again.</div><div class="m"> 11For this is what the Lord says about Shallum#22:11 Also called Jehoahaz son of Josiah, who succeeded his father as king of Judah but has gone from this place: &#8220;He will never return. 12He will die in the place where they have led him captive; he will not see this land again.&#8221;</div><div class="q1"> 13&#8220;Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness,</div><div class="q2">his upper rooms by injustice,</div><div class="q1">making his own people work for nothing,</div><div class="q2">not paying them for their labor.</div><div class="q1"> 14He says, &#8216;I will build myself a great palace</div><div class="q2">with spacious upper rooms.&#8217;</div><div class="q1">So he makes large windows in it,</div><div class="q2">panels it with cedar</div><div class="q2">and decorates it in red.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 15&#8220;Does it make you a king</div><div class="q2">to have more and more cedar?</div><div class="q1">Did not your father have food and drink?</div><div class="q2">He did what was right and just,</div><div class="q2">so all went well with him.</div><div class="q1"> 16He defended the cause of the poor and needy,</div><div class="q2">and so all went well.</div><div class="q1">Is that not what it means to know me?&#8221;</div><div class="q2">declares the Lord.</div><div class="q1"> 17&#8220;But your eyes and your heart</div><div class="q2">are set only on dishonest gain,</div><div class="q1">on shedding innocent blood</div><div class="q2">and on oppression and extortion.&#8221;</div><div class="m"> 18Therefore this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;They will not mourn for him:</div><div class="q2">&#8216;Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!&#8217;</div><div class="q1">They will not mourn for him:</div><div class="q2">&#8216;Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!&#8217;</div><div class="q1"> 19He will have the burial of a donkey&#8212;</div><div class="q2">dragged away and thrown</div><div class="q2">outside the gates of Jerusalem.&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 20&#8220;Go up to Lebanon and cry out,</div><div class="q2">let your voice be heard in Bashan,</div><div class="q1">cry out from Abarim,</div><div class="q2">for all your allies are crushed.</div><div class="q1"> 21I warned you when you felt secure,</div><div class="q2">but you said, &#8216;I will not listen!&#8217;</div><div class="q1">This has been your way from your youth;</div><div class="q2">you have not obeyed me.</div><div class="q1"> 22The wind will drive all your shepherds away,</div><div class="q2">and your allies will go into exile.</div><div class="q1">Then you will be ashamed and disgraced</div><div class="q2">because of all your wickedness.</div><div class="q1"> 23You who live in &#8216;Lebanon,#22:23 That is, the palace in Jerusalem (see 1 Kings 7:2)&#8217;</div><div class="q2">who are nestled in cedar buildings,</div><div class="q1">how you will groan when pangs come upon you,</div><div class="q2">pain like that of a woman in labor!</div><div class="p"> 24&#8220;As surely as I live,&#8221; declares the Lord, &#8220;even if you, Jehoiachin#22:24 Hebrew Koniah, a variant of Jehoiachin; also in verse 28 son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring on my right hand, I would still pull you off. 25I will deliver you into the hands of those who want to kill you, those you fear&#8212;Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the Babylonians.#22:25 Or Chaldeans 26I will hurl you and the mother who gave you birth into another country, where neither of you was born, and there you both will die. 27You will never come back to the land you long to return to.&#8221;</div><div class="q1"> 28Is this man Jehoiachin a despised, broken pot,</div><div class="q2">an object no one wants?</div><div class="q1">Why will he and his children be hurled out,</div><div class="q2">cast into a land they do not know?</div><div class="q1"> 29O land, land, land,</div><div class="q2">hear the word of the Lord!</div><div class="q1"> 30This is what the Lord says:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Record this man as if childless,</div><div class="q2">a man who will not prosper in his lifetime,</div><div class="q1">for none of his offspring will prosper,</div><div class="q2">none will sit on the throne of David</div><div class="q2">or rule anymore in Judah.&#8221;</div>

Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.</div><div class="s1">Judging Others</div><div class="p"> 37 &#8220;Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 39He also told them this parable: &#8220;Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.</div><div class="p"> 41 &#8220;Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother&#8217;s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42How can you say to your brother, &#8216;Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,&#8217; when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother&#8217;s eye.</div><div class="s1">A Tree and Its Fruit</div><div class="p"> 43 &#8220;No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.</div><div class="s1">The Wise and Foolish Builders</div><div class="p"> 46 &#8220;Why do you call me, &#8216;Lord, Lord,&#8217; and do not do what I say? 47As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.&#8221;</div>

Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God&#8217;s work&#8212;which is by faith. 5The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. 7They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.</div><div class="p"> 8We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers&#8212;and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.</div><div class="s1">The Lord&#8217;s Grace to Paul</div><div class="p"> 12I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. 13Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners&#8212;of whom I am the worst. 16But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. 17Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.</div><div class="s1">The Charge to Timothy Renewed</div><div class="p"> 18Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, 19holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. 20Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.</div>
