         <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Christ&#8217;s Sacrifice Once for All</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="HEB.10.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming&#8212;not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="HEB.10.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="HEB.10.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="HEB.10.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="HEB.10.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="HEB.10.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="HEB.10.5"><span class="content">&#8220;Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="HEB.10.5"><span class="content">but a body you prepared for me;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="HEB.10.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="HEB.10.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">with burnt offerings and sin offerings</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="HEB.10.6"><span class="content">you were not pleased.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="HEB.10.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="HEB.10.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Then I said, &#8216;Here I am&#8212;it is written about me in the scroll&#8212;</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="HEB.10.7"><span class="content">I have come to do your will, my God.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">10:7 </span><span class="ft">Psalm 40:6-8 (see Septuagint)</span></span></span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="HEB.10.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="HEB.10.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">First he said, &#8220;Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them&#8221;&#8212;though they were offered in accordance with the law. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="HEB.10.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Then he said, &#8220;Here I am, I have come to do your will.&#8221; He sets aside the first to establish the second. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="HEB.10.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="HEB.10.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="HEB.10.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="HEB.10.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="HEB.10.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="HEB.10.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="HEB.10.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="HEB.10.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="HEB.10.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="HEB.10.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">&#8220;This is the covenant I will make with them</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="HEB.10.16"><span class="content">after that time, says the Lord.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="HEB.10.16"><span class="content">I will put my laws in their hearts,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="HEB.10.16"><span class="content">and I will write them on their minds.&#8221;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">10:16 </span><span class="ft">Jer. 31:33</span></span></span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="HEB.10.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="HEB.10.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Then he adds:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="HEB.10.17"><span class="content">&#8220;Their sins and lawless acts</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="HEB.10.17"><span class="content">I will remember no more.&#8221;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">10:17 </span><span class="ft">Jer. 31:34</span></span></span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="HEB.10.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="HEB.10.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">A Call to Persevere in Faith</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="HEB.10.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="HEB.10.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="HEB.10.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="HEB.10.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">and since we have a great priest over the house of God, </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="HEB.10.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="HEB.10.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="HEB.10.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="HEB.10.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another&#8212;and all the more as you see the Day approaching.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="HEB.10.25"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="HEB.10.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="HEB.10.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="HEB.10.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="HEB.10.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="HEB.11.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="HEB.11.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="HEB.11.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="HEB.11.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="HEB.11.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">11:11 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">By faith Abraham, even though he was too old to have children&#8212;and Sarah herself was not able to conceive&#8212;was enabled to become a father because he</span></span></span><span class="content"> considered him faithful who had made the promise. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="HEB.11.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="HEB.11.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="HEB.11.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="HEB.11.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="HEB.11.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="HEB.11.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">Instead, they were longing for a better country&#8212;a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="HEB.11.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="HEB.11.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. And all the men of Jabesh said to him, &#8220;Make a treaty with us, and we will be subject to you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="1SA.11.1"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="1SA.11.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">But Nahash the Ammonite replied, &#8220;I will make a treaty with you only on the condition that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace on all Israel.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="1SA.11.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="1SA.11.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">The elders of Jabesh said to him, &#8220;Give us seven days so we can send messengers throughout Israel; if no one comes to rescue us, we will surrender to you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="1SA.11.3"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="1SA.11.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these terms to the people, they all wept aloud. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="1SA.11.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Just then Saul was returning from the fields, behind his oxen, and he asked, &#8220;What is wrong with everyone? Why are they weeping?&#8221; Then they repeated to him what the men of Jabesh had said.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="1SA.11.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="1SA.11.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="1SA.11.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, &#8220;This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel.&#8221; Then the terror of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> fell on the people, and they came out together as one. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1SA.11.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">When Saul mustered them at Bezek, the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and those of Judah thirty thousand.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1SA.11.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="1SA.11.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">They told the messengers who had come, &#8220;Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, &#8216;By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be rescued.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1SA.11.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">They said to the Ammonites, &#8220;Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever you like.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1SA.11.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="1SA.11.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions; during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Saul Confirmed as King</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="1SA.11.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1SA.11.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">The people then said to Samuel, &#8220;Who was it that asked, &#8216;Shall Saul reign over us?&#8217; Turn these men over to us so that we may put them to death.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1SA.11.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1SA.11.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">But Saul said, &#8220;No one will be put to death today, for this day the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has rescued Israel.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1SA.11.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1SA.11.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Then Samuel said to the people, &#8220;Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingship.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="1SA.11.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">So all the people went to Gilgal and made Saul king in the presence of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">.
