Scientists believe black holes exist far out in space. They believe this even though no one has ever seen a black hole with the naked eye. They base their belief on the actions of other stars. That illustrates a truth about God. No one has ever seen God, yet we believe God exists. The writer of the book of Hebrews shows how critical faith is to a belief in God. He writes in chapter 11, "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see." He then says, "It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him." What does it mean to live by faith? Some people define faith as believing something good is going to happen to them—like health and wealth. Some think faith is blindly leaping into the dark against all known facts. In truth, biblical faith is acting on what God has revealed about Himself and His will. When God warned Noah of an unseen flood, Noah believed God and built an ark. He acted on God's revelation. Sometimes faith results in amazing success—like Abraham and Sarah having a child in their old age. Other times, God rewards faith by giving us strength to endure pain in this life while reserving a great reward for us beyond the grave. Faith enables us to hold fast to our unseen God, during good times and bad times. We know God will never let us down.
