DAY 97 OF 365

Some years ago, people talked a lot about midlife crises. Experts describe this as a time in one's midlife life when self-doubt sets in. Conditions like the death of parents, losing a job, or failure to reach one's ambition trigger so-called midlife crisis. In recent years, experts reject the idea that all people have them. Even though dramatic events affect some people, they do not affect everyone. Even so, Moses had to come to grips with a dramatic event in his life. God called him to lead ancient Israel out of Egypt. Their goal was to reach the land God had promised their ancestor Abraham. Moses led the people out of Egypt, but something happened in the wilderness that kept Moses from entering the Promised Land. At a crucial time in the wilderness, Moses got so angry with the people that he disobeyed God's command. God told him to speak to a rock and water would come out for the people to drink. Moses struck the rock not once, but twice. In so doing, he rebelled against God's authority. For that brazen rebellion, God denied Moses his dream of entering the Promised Land. God told Moses to anoint and encourage Joshua to lead the people into the land. It is still true: when we fail to honor and respect God's authority, we may forfeit our right to lead or receive God's blessings.
