DAY 158 OF 365

Every day, law-breakers stand before judges and plead for mercy. Sometimes a judge gives a second chance when it seems fitting. Like judges, God also gives second chances. He gave one to King David. David slew Goliath and won the praise of his nation. He fought and won many battles, and finally became king over the nation. But success caused David to stumble. He committed adultery with Bathsheba and set up her husband to die in a battle. When the prophet confronted David, he confessed and God forgave him, but the scars remained. His son born to Bathsheba died; another son, Amnon, raped his half sister, Tamar; Tamar’s brother, Absalom—also David’s son—killed Amnon for raping his sister. Absalom had to flee for his life. Later, he returned, rebelled against his father, David, and seized the throne. David had to flee to save his own life. David’s general, Joab, finally killed Absalom and saved the throne for David. Besides all this, his enemies kept mocking him, saying God had abandoned him. Despite all David’s troubles, he could still say (Psalm 3), “O LORD, you are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.” David could say that because after failing God, he confessed and forsook his sin. The price of disobedience was severe, but he had the peace that comes from God’s forgiveness. God gave him a second chance.
