DAY 162 OF 365

Jack Keels married a non-Christian to avoid becoming a missionary. He was sure that his non-Christian wife would never agree to live in a poverty-stricken country. But the day after they married, she told him she wanted to be a missionary. People try various tactics to evade God’s will. Moses tried; Jonah tried. God told Jonah to go to the great city of Nineveh. He was to announce God’s judgment against it because of its great wickedness. To avoid his assignment, Jonah rose up and went in the opposite direction from Nineveh. He went down to Joppa, found a ship headed for Spain, paid the fare, got on board and went to sleep. He knew he could not escape from God entirely, but he was trying to get away from the place where God was fulfilling His plans. Jonah’s idea did not work. The Lord sent a great storm to rock that ship. The storm threatened to kill him and all the other sailors. When people try to evade God and God’s will, they often do stupid things—hoping to get away from God. Jonah forgot what David said: “I can never get away from your presence. If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there you hand will guide me.” Since we can never get away from God’s presence, why try? Instead, take delight in doing what pleases Him.
