DAY 152 OF 365

At last count, the United States was a party to nearly 1,000 treaties with nations worldwide. We have signed another 5,000 agreements. When nations adopt a treaty, each party agrees to abide by the terms. Treaties foster peace and order in the world—but only if the parties fulfill their obligations. God is also a covenant maker. God made a covenant with Abraham. Under it, God promised to bless the man, and through his offspring, to bless all the nations of the world. When Moses came along, he reminded the people of that covenant in Deuteronomy 6. He insisted that God did not choose them because they deserved it. Rather, God chose them because He is a God of love and because He had made a covenant with their forefathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God chose them, not to put them on a pedestal, but as a means of fulfilling God’s sovereign plan to save all humanity. They would be God’s conduit or agent for giving humanity God’s written word, the Bible. They would be the channel for bringing God’s Son into the world as a Savior for all humanity. Their existence demonstrates God’s faithfulness both to them and to us. For just as God kept His promise to Abraham, God will keep every promise He makes to us. God decreed that those who repent and come to Him by faith in His Son shall have eternal life. God will never break that promise.
