Daily Direction Reading Plan

DAY 144 OF 365

Pollsters recently asked people who had at least $1 million if they felt wealthy. Forty-two percent said no—that it would take at least $7.5 million to make them feel wealthy. Even with their millions, they aspired to have more. Unlike those people who long to feel wealthy, the psalmist longed to know God and to grow in faith; he longed to know God more intimately. Psalm 119 reflects this passionate aspiration. He writes, “Teach me your decrees, O LORD; I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart. Make me walk along the path of your commands. For that is where my happiness is found. Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word. Reassure me of your promise, made to those who fear you. Help me abandon my shameful ways, for your regulations are good. I long to obey your commandments! Renew my life with your goodness.” How many people are satisfied with a mediocre spiritual life, rather than yearning, as the psalmist did, to grow ever closer to God? Of course, he knew that spiritual growth is not attainable in his own strength. That is why he and we plead with God to help us. God will help us when we ask in the name of His Son, Jesus, and seek Him in His Word.
