Greater Journey

DAY 2 OF 12

GREATER PACE

READY
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.” 1 Corinthians 9:24 (ESV)

SET
When God spoke the world into existence, He also breathed rhythms into existence. Think about how many events are rhythmically happening all around us as you read this very sentence. Our hearts are beating, our lungs are breathing, the Earth is rotating on its axis while revolving around the Sun at speeds our minds cannot completely fathom. God created us to step to rhythms. As we run, our stride creates another pattern to join the thousands of other rhythmic behaviors all around us. What’s your running rhythm like? How can we run at a greater rhythm, that is, at a greater pace? Remember that greater pace comes through greater Grace. Here are four things we can do to run at a greater pace as we run through this race called life:

1. Run with the end in mind.

One of the easiest times to pick up the pace when you train and race is when you see the finish line. You are aware of the brevity of time left in the workout or race. The closeness of the finish leads your mind and body to respond at a greater and faster pace. As a Christian, staying aware of the quickness of life and that the finish line is not far away can keep you focused on running with all your heart. Stay focused and remember the joy of giving it your all for the One who gave His all for you. “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7)

2. Strip off the weights.

Have you ever seen people train with a weighted vest on? The goal of that weighted vest is to build greater strength. When we lift spiritual weights, be aware that if we are being weighed down by sins and the burdens of the world, we are inevitably slowing our spiritual pace. Check and see if there are any weights in your life that can be stripped off to lead you to a greater pace and greater freedom. “Let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1 (ESV)

3. Fuel yourself well.

As runners, we know that training goes beyond just what we do when we have our running shoes on. Training includes fueling your body well with nutritious food. Running on empty is a phrase for a reason! Without proper food and water in your system, your running pace is going to take a dive. As spiritual athletes, choosing to spend a good portion of time in the Word and seeking to know the Lord is key to a greater pace. Protect your time with God the same way you protect your training time and other important parts of your life. “Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 (ESV)

4. Run together.

When we find people who are running with a purpose toward the finish line, stripping away any weights, and fueling themselves well, running together will lead to an even greater pace. Surround yourself with those who are focused to go the distance and run the race at a greater pace. “Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their toil.” Ecclesiastes 4:9 (ESV)

May we receive His Grace continually to run the race that He specifically set out for us to run. May our lives be used to glorify His Name always!

GO

  • In what ways are you healthy physically? In what ways are you healthy spiritually?
  • What does “greater pace comes through greater Grace” mean to you?
  • Of the four categories above, is there one that stands out to you to grow in?
  • Are there any new rhythms you want to incorporate into your day, your week, and your life? If so, make a step today to improve your pace.

WORKOUT
Joshua 1:9, Philippians 3:12-14, Mark 1:35, Acts 2:42
