Indescribable Compassion (S1-E6)Sample

Don't turn away from me!
In this episode of The Chosen, a man with leprosy approaches Jesus. Everyone else keeps their distance—afraid, disgusted, unwilling to come near. But Jesus steps closer.
Leprosy in that time meant more than physical suffering. It meant exile. You couldn’t live among your family, enter the temple, or even touch another person. You were, in every sense, untouchable. So when the man cries out, “Lord, don’t turn away from me!” it’s a desperate plea for both healing and human connection.
What happens next shocks everyone. Jesus reaches out and touches him. No one had touched this man in years. His disciples recoil, but Jesus is “moved with compassion.” The original Greek word, splagchnizomai, describes a deep, gut-level emotion. Then He speaks: “I am willing. Be clean.” Instantly, the man is healed.
Jesus tells him to show himself to the priest, proof of his restored life, and adds, “Tell no one.” But how could he stay silent? After years of isolation, someone had finally drawn near. He couldn’t help but share what Jesus had done.
This story reveals the heart of God. Jesus moves toward what everyone else avoids. He isn’t afraid of our shame, our wounds, or our hidden “leprosy.” He already knows every broken part, and He still reaches out with compassion.
Maybe there’s something in your life that feels untouchable: a mistake, a fear, a part of your story you’d rather hide. Jesus isn’t repelled by it. He wants to come close and bring restoration. The only question is: will you let Him?
Reflection Questions
- Where do you need Jesus to bring healing or restoration in your life?
- Do you believe He wants to come close to you?
- Who around you might Jesus want to reach out to through you?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for coming close when others turn away. Touch the places in my life that need your healing. Restore what’s been lost, and help me share your compassion with others. Amen.
