Indescribable Compassion (S1-E6)

DAY 2 OF 4

You have some things to take care of at home....

In The Chosen, Jesus gives Peter a simple but important reminder: he still has work to do at home. Jesus reminds Peter of his responsibility.

That raises an important question for all of us: what does obedience look like right where we are?

Sometimes, like Peter, we can be so eager to run after Jesus that we overlook the people or tasks closest to us. Other times, we can be so consumed by home, work, or routine that we miss Jesus’ invitation to step out and proclaim His kingdom.

In Luke 9, Jesus meets several people who say they want to follow Him—but they all have conditions. One man wants to wait until after his father’s funeral; another wants to say goodbye to family first. Jesus’ response sounds harsh: “Let the dead bury their own dead… no one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

His words aren’t about rejecting family or duty; they’re about misplaced priorities. Jesus knows the heart of each person He calls. To one, He says, “Go home and take care of what’s needed.” To another, “Come now—this can’t wait.” The difference is discernment.

That’s what real discipleship requires—being so attuned to Jesus that we recognize what He’s asking in each situation. Sometimes obedience means going home and serving faithfully there. Other times it means stepping out when staying feels safer. In both cases, following Jesus means trusting His timing and direction.

Reflection Questions

  • What might Jesus be asking you to prioritize right now—home, ministry, rest, or something else?
  • Do you tend to rush ahead or hold back when he calls?
  • How can you grow in listening for His specific direction?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to listen carefully to what You say to me so that I have clarity about what You want to prioritize. Teach me to follow Your lead in every moment. Amen.
