 <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1">Daniel&#8217;s Vision of a Man</div><div class="p"> 1In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great war.#10:1 Or true and burdensome The understanding of the message came to him in a vision.</div><div class="p"> 2At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. 3I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.</div><div class="p"> 4On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, 5I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. 6His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.</div><div class="p"> 7I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. 8So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless. 9Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground.</div><div class="p"> 10A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11He said, &#8220;Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.&#8221; And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.</div><div class="p"> 12Then he continued, &#8220;Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. 14Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15While he was saying this to me, I bowed with my face toward the ground and was speechless. 16Then one who looked like a man#10:16 Most manuscripts of the Masoretic Text; one manuscript of the Masoretic Text, Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint Then something that looked like a human hand touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, &#8220;I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I feel very weak. 17How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18Again the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength. 19&#8220;Do not be afraid, you who are highly esteemed,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Peace! Be strong now; be strong.&#8221;</div><div class="p">When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, &#8220;Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20So he said, &#8220;Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come; 21but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.</div>

 <div class="label">12</div><div class="s1">The End Times</div><div class="p"> 1&#8220;At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people&#8212;everyone whose name is found written in the book&#8212;will be delivered. 2Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise#12:3 Or who impart wisdom will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. 4But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 5Then I, Daniel, looked, and there before me stood two others, one on this bank of the river and one on the opposite bank. 6One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, &#8220;How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, &#8220;It will be for a time, times and half a time.#12:7 Or a year, two years and half a year When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, &#8220;My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9He replied, &#8220;Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. 10Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.</div><div class="p"> 11&#8220;From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. 12Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">5</div><div class="s1">Tattenai&#8217;s Letter to Darius</div><div class="p"> 1Now Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the prophet, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them. 2Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jozadak set to work to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.</div><div class="p"> 3At that time Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates went to them and asked, &#8220;Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?&#8221; 4They#5:4 See Septuagint; Aramaic We. also asked, &#8220;What are the names of those who are constructing this building?&#8221; 5But the eye of their God was watching over the elders of the Jews, and they were not stopped until a report could go to Darius and his written reply be received.</div><div class="p"> 6This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates, the officials of Trans-Euphrates, sent to King Darius. 7The report they sent him read as follows:</div><div class="pmo">To King Darius:</div><div class="b"></div><div class="pmo">Cordial greetings.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"> 8The king should know that we went to the district of Judah, to the temple of the great God. The people are building it with large stones and placing the timbers in the walls. The work is being carried on with diligence and is making rapid progress under their direction.</div><div class="pm"> 9We questioned the elders and asked them, &#8220;Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?&#8221; 10We also asked them their names, so that we could write down the names of their leaders for your information.</div><div class="pm"> 11This is the answer they gave us:</div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm">&#8220;We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, one that a great king of Israel built and finished. 12But because our ancestors angered the God of heaven, he gave them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar the Chaldean, king of Babylon, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon.</div><div class="pm"> 13&#8220;However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus issued a decree to rebuild this house of God. 14He even removed from the temple#5:14 Or palace of Babylon the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple#5:14 Or palace in Babylon. Then King Cyrus gave them to a man named Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed governor, 15and he told him, &#8216;Take these articles and go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem. And rebuild the house of God on its site.&#8217;</div><div class="pm"> 16&#8220;So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God in Jerusalem. From that day to the present it has been under construction but is not yet finished.&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"> 17Now if it pleases the king, let a search be made in the royal archives of Babylon to see if King Cyrus did in fact issue a decree to rebuild this house of God in Jerusalem. Then let the king send us his decision in this matter.</div>

 <div class="label">6</div><div class="s1">The Decree of Darius</div><div class="p"> 1King Darius then issued an order, and they searched in the archives stored in the treasury at Babylon. 2A scroll was found in the citadel of Ecbatana in the province of Media, and this was written on it:</div><div class="pmo">Memorandum:</div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"> 3In the first year of King Cyrus, the king issued a decree concerning the temple of God in Jerusalem:</div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm">Let the temple be rebuilt as a place to present sacrifices, and let its foundations be laid. It is to be sixty cubits#6:3 That is, about 90 feet or about 27 meters high and sixty cubits wide, 4with three courses of large stones and one of timbers. The costs are to be paid by the royal treasury. 5Also, the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon, are to be returned to their places in the temple in Jerusalem; they are to be deposited in the house of God.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="pm"> 6Now then, Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and you other officials of that province, stay away from there. 7Do not interfere with the work on this temple of God. Let the governor of the Jews and the Jewish elders rebuild this house of God on its site.</div><div class="pm"> 8Moreover, I hereby decree what you are to do for these elders of the Jews in the construction of this house of God:</div><div class="pm">Their expenses are to be fully paid out of the royal treasury, from the revenues of Trans-Euphrates, so that the work will not stop. 9Whatever is needed&#8212;young bulls, rams, male lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, and wheat, salt, wine and olive oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem&#8212;must be given them daily without fail, 10so that they may offer sacrifices pleasing to the God of heaven and pray for the well-being of the king and his sons.</div><div class="pm"> 11Furthermore, I decree that if anyone defies this edict, a beam is to be pulled from their house and they are to be impaled on it. And for this crime their house is to be made a pile of rubble. 12May God, who has caused his Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or people who lifts a hand to change this decree or to destroy this temple in Jerusalem.</div><div class="pm">I Darius have decreed it. Let it be carried out with diligence.</div><div class="s1">Completion and Dedication of the Temple</div><div class="p"> 13Then, because of the decree King Darius had sent, Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates carried it out with diligence. 14So the elders of the Jews continued to build and prosper under the preaching of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah, a descendant of Iddo. They finished building the temple according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes, kings of Persia. 15The temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.</div><div class="p"> 16Then the people of Israel&#8212;the priests, the Levites and the rest of the exiles&#8212;celebrated the dedication of the house of God with joy. 17For the dedication of this house of God they offered a hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred male lambs and, as a sin offering#6:17 Or purification offering for all Israel, twelve male goats, one for each of the tribes of Israel. 18And they installed the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their groups for the service of God at Jerusalem, according to what is written in the Book of Moses.</div><div class="s1">The Passover</div><div class="p"> 19On the fourteenth day of the first month, the exiles celebrated the Passover. 20The priests and Levites had purified themselves and were all ceremonially clean. The Levites slaughtered the Passover lamb for all the exiles, for their relatives the priests and for themselves. 21So the Israelites who had returned from the exile ate it, together with all who had separated themselves from the unclean practices of their Gentile neighbors in order to seek the Lord, the God of Israel. 22For seven days they celebrated with joy the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because the Lord had filled them with joy by changing the attitude of the king of Assyria so that he assisted them in the work on the house of God, the God of Israel.</div>

 <div class="label">1</div><div class="s1">A Call to Build the House of the Lord</div><div class="p"> 1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak,#1:1 Hebrew Jehozadak, a variant of Jozadak; also in verses 12 and 14 the high priest:</div><div class="p"> 2This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;These people say, &#8216;The time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord&#8217;s house.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3Then the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 4&#8220;Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;Give careful thought to your ways. 6You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;Give careful thought to your ways. 8Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,&#8221; says the Lord. 9&#8220;You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?&#8221; declares the Lord Almighty. &#8220;Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. 10Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. 11I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the Lord their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 13Then Haggai, the Lord&#8217;s messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people: &#8220;I am with you,&#8221; declares the Lord. 14So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God, 15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month.</div><div class="s1">The Promised Glory of the New House</div><div class="p">In the second year of King Darius,</div>

Do not fear.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8216;In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. 7I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,&#8217; says the Lord Almighty. 8&#8216;The silver is mine and the gold is mine,&#8217; declares the Lord Almighty. 9&#8216;The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,&#8217; says the Lord Almighty. &#8216;And in this place I will grant peace,&#8217; declares the Lord Almighty.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Blessings for a Defiled People</div><div class="p"> 10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Haggai: 11&#8220;This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8216;Ask the priests what the law says: 12If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">The priests answered, &#8220;No.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13Then Haggai said, &#8220;If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Yes,&#8221; the priests replied, &#8220;it becomes defiled.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14Then Haggai said, &#8220;&#8198;&#8216;So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,&#8217; declares the Lord. &#8216;Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.</div><div class="p"> 15&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Now give careful thought to this from this day on#2:15 Or to the days past&#8212;consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the Lord&#8217;s temple. 16When anyone came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty. 17I struck all the work of your hands with blight, mildew and hail, yet you did not return to me,&#8217; declares the Lord. 18&#8216;From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the Lord&#8217;s temple was laid. Give careful thought: 19Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;From this day on I will bless you.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Zerubbabel the Lord&#8217;s Signet Ring</div><div class="p"> 20The word of the Lord came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: 21&#8220;Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. 22I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.</div><div class="p"> 23&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;On that day,&#8217; declares the Lord Almighty, &#8216;I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,&#8217; declares the Lord, &#8216;and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,&#8217; declares the Lord Almighty.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">1</div><div class="s1">A Call to Return to the Lord</div><div class="p"> 1In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo:</div><div class="p"> 2&#8220;The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. 3Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8216;Return to me,&#8217; declares the Lord Almighty, &#8216;and I will return to you,&#8217; says the Lord Almighty. 4Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8216;Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.&#8217; But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord. 5Where are your ancestors now? And the prophets, do they live forever? 6But did not my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, overtake your ancestors?</div><div class="p">&#8220;Then they repented and said, &#8216;The Lord Almighty has done to us what our ways and practices deserve, just as he determined to do.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Man Among the Myrtle Trees</div><div class="p"> 7On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo.</div><div class="p"> 8During the night I had a vision, and there before me was a man mounted on a red horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, brown and white horses.</div><div class="p"> 9I asked, &#8220;What are these, my lord?&#8221;</div><div class="p">The angel who was talking with me answered, &#8220;I will show you what they are.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, &#8220;They are the ones the Lord has sent to go throughout the earth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11And they reported to the angel of the Lord who was standing among the myrtle trees, &#8220;We have gone throughout the earth and found the whole world at rest and in peace.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12Then the angel of the Lord said, &#8220;Lord Almighty, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and from the towns of Judah, which you have been angry with these seventy years?&#8221; 13So the Lord spoke kind and comforting words to the angel who talked with me.</div><div class="p"> 14Then the angel who was speaking to me said, &#8220;Proclaim this word: This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8216;I am very jealous for Jerusalem and Zion, 15and I am very angry with the nations that feel secure. I was only a little angry, but they went too far with the punishment.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 16&#8220;Therefore this is what the Lord says: &#8216;I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there my house will be rebuilt. And the measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem,&#8217; declares the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;Proclaim further: This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8216;My towns will again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again comfort Zion and choose Jerusalem.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Four Horns and Four Craftsmen</div><div class="p"> 18Then I looked up, and there before me were four horns. 19I asked the angel who was speaking to me, &#8220;What are these?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He answered me, &#8220;These are the horns that scattered Judah, Israel and Jerusalem.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21I asked, &#8220;What are these coming to do?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He answered, &#8220;These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise their head, but the craftsmen have come to terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations who lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to scatter its people.&#8221;#1:21 In Hebrew texts 1:18-21 is numbered 2:1-4.</div>

 <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1">A Man With a Measuring Line</div><div class="p"> # In Hebrew texts 2:1-13 is numbered 2:5-17. 1Then I looked up, and there before me was a man with a measuring line in his hand. 2I asked, &#8220;Where are you going?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He answered me, &#8220;To measure Jerusalem, to find out how wide and how long it is.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 3While the angel who was speaking to me was leaving, another angel came to meet him 4and said to him: &#8220;Run, tell that young man, &#8216;Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the great number of people and animals in it. 5And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,&#8217; declares the Lord, &#8216;and I will be its glory within.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;Come! So the Lord Almighty was very angry.</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,&#8217; says the Lord Almighty. 14&#8216;I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations, where they were strangers. The land they left behind them was so desolate that no one traveled through it. This is how they made the pleasant land desolate.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

No one could go about their business safely because of their enemies, since I had turned everyone against their neighbor. 11But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people as I did in the past,&#8221; declares the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;The seed will grow well, the vine will yield its fruit, the ground will produce its crops, and the heavens will drop their dew. I will give all these things as an inheritance to the remnant of this people. 13Just as you, Judah and Israel, have been a curse#8:13 That is, your name has been used in cursing (see Jer. 29:22); or, you have been regarded as under a curse. among the nations, so I will save you, and you will be a blessing.#8:13 Or and your name will be used in blessings (see Gen. 48:20); or and you will be seen as blessed Do not be afraid, but let your hands be strong.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;Just as I had determined to bring disaster on you and showed no pity when your ancestors angered me,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty, 15&#8220;so now I have determined to do good again to Jerusalem and Judah. Do not be afraid. 16These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts; 17do not plot evil against each other, and do not love to swear falsely. I hate all this,&#8221; declares the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 18The word of the Lord Almighty came to me.</div><div class="p"> 19This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;The fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth months will become joyful and glad occasions and happy festivals for Judah. Therefore love truth and peace.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20This is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;Many peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will yet come, 21and the inhabitants of one city will go to another and say, &#8216;Let us go at once to entreat the Lord and seek the Lord Almighty. Those who sell them say, &#8216;Praise the Lord, I am rich!&#8217; Their own shepherds do not spare them. 6For I will no longer have pity on the people of the land,&#8221; declares the Lord. &#8220;I will give everyone into the hands of their neighbors and their king. They will devastate the land, and I will not rescue anyone from their hands.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7So I shepherded the flock marked for slaughter, particularly the oppressed of the flock. Then I took two staffs and called one Favor and the other Union, and I shepherded the flock. 8In one month I got rid of the three shepherds.</div><div class="p">The flock detested me, and I grew weary of them 9and said, &#8220;I will not be your shepherd. Let the dying die, and the perishing perish. Let those who are left eat one another&#8217;s flesh.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10Then I took my staff called Favor and broke it, revoking the covenant I had made with all the nations. 11It was revoked on that day, and so the oppressed of the flock who were watching me knew it was the word of the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 12I told them, &#8220;If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.&#8221; So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.</div><div class="p"> 13And the Lord said to me, &#8220;Throw it to the potter&#8221;&#8212;the handsome price at which they valued me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the house of the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 14Then I broke my second staff called Union, breaking the family bond between Judah and Israel.</div><div class="p"> 15Then the Lord said to me, &#8220;Take again the equipment of a foolish shepherd. 16For I am going to raise up a shepherd over the land who will not care for the lost, or seek the young, or heal the injured, or feed the healthy, but will eat the meat of the choice sheep, tearing off their hooves.</div><div class="q1"> 17&#8220;Woe to the worthless shepherd,</div><div class="q2">who deserts the flock!</div><div class="q1">May the sword strike his arm and his right eye!</div><div class="q2">May his arm be completely withered,</div><div class="q2">his right eye totally blinded!&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">12</div><div class="s1">Jerusalem&#8217;s Enemies to Be Destroyed</div><div class="p"> 1A prophecy: The word of the Lord concerning Israel.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">The Lord, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the human spirit within a person, declares: 2&#8220;I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. 3On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves. 4On that day I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness,&#8221; declares the Lord. &#8220;I will keep a watchful eye over Judah, but I will blind all the horses of the nations. 5Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, &#8216;The people of Jerusalem are strong, because the Lord Almighty is their God.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a firepot in a woodpile, like a flaming torch among sheaves. They will consume all the surrounding peoples right and left, but Jerusalem will remain intact in her place.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;The Lord will save the dwellings of Judah first, so that the honor of the house of David and of Jerusalem&#8217;s inhabitants may not be greater than that of Judah. 8On that day the Lord will shield those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the Lord going before them. 9On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem.</div><div class="s1">Mourning for the One They Pierced</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit#12:10 Or the Spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on#12:10 Or to me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. 11On that day the weeping in Jerusalem will be as great as the weeping of Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12The land will mourn, each clan by itself, with their wives by themselves: the clan of the house of David and their wives, the clan of the house of Nathan and their wives, 13the clan of the house of Levi and their wives, the clan of Shimei and their wives, 14and all the rest of the clans and their wives.</div>

 <div class="label">13</div><div class="s1">Cleansing From Sin</div><div class="p"> 1&#8220;On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.</div><div class="p"> 2&#8220;On that day, I will banish the names of the idols from the land, and they will be remembered no more,&#8221; declares the Lord Almighty. &#8220;I will remove both the prophets and the spirit of impurity from the land. 3And if anyone still prophesies, their father and mother, to whom they were born, will say to them, &#8216;You must die, because you have told lies in the Lord&#8217;s name.&#8217; Then their own parents will stab the one who prophesies.</div><div class="p"> 4&#8220;On that day every prophet will be ashamed of their prophetic vision. They will not put on a prophet&#8217;s garment of hair in order to deceive. 5Each will say, &#8216;I am not a prophet. I am a farmer; the land has been my livelihood since my youth.#13:5 Or farmer; a man sold me in my youth&#8217; 6If someone asks, &#8216;What are these wounds on your body#13:6 Or wounds between your hands?&#8217; they will answer, &#8216;The wounds I was given at the house of my friends.&#8217;</div><div class="s1">The Shepherd Struck, the Sheep Scattered</div><div class="q1"> 7&#8220;Awake, sword, against my shepherd,</div><div class="q2">against the man who is close to me!&#8221;</div><div class="q2">declares the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Strike the shepherd,</div><div class="q2">and the sheep will be scattered,</div><div class="q2">and I will turn my hand against the little ones.</div><div class="q1"> 8In the whole land,&#8221; declares the Lord,</div><div class="q2">&#8220;two-thirds will be struck down and perish;</div><div class="q2">yet one-third will be left in it.</div><div class="q1"> 9This third I will put into the fire;</div><div class="q2">I will refine them like silver</div><div class="q2">and test them like gold.</div><div class="q1">They will call on my name</div><div class="q2">and I will answer them;</div><div class="q1">I will say, &#8216;They are my people,&#8217;</div><div class="q2">and they will say, &#8216;The Lord is our God.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">14</div><div class="s1">The Lord Comes and Reigns</div><div class="p"> 1A day of the Lord is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls.</div><div class="p"> 2I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city. 3Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. 4On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. 5You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake#14:5 Or 5 My mountain valley will be blocked and will extend to Azel. It will be blocked as it was blocked because of the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.</div><div class="p"> 6On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. 7It will be a unique day&#8212;a day known only to the Lord&#8212;with no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will be light.</div><div class="p"> 8On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.</div><div class="p"> 9The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.</div><div class="p"> 10The whole land, from Geba to Rimmon, south of Jerusalem, will become like the Arabah. But Jerusalem will be raised up high from the Benjamin Gate to the site of the First Gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses, and will remain in its place. 11It will be inhabited; never again will it be destroyed. Jerusalem will be secure.</div><div class="p"> 12This is the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. 13On that day people will be stricken by the Lord with great panic. They will seize each other by the hand and attack one another. 14Judah too will fight at Jerusalem. The wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected&#8212;great quantities of gold and silver and clothing. 15A similar plague will strike the horses and mules, the camels and donkeys, and all the animals in those camps.</div><div class="p"> 16Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. 17If any of the peoples of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, they will have no rain. 18If the Egyptian people do not go up and take part, they will have no rain. The Lord#14:18 Or part, then the Lord will bring on them the plague he inflicts on the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. 19This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.</div><div class="p"> 20On that day Holy to the Lord will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the Lord&#8217;s house will be like the sacred bowls in front of the altar. 21Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the Lord Almighty, and all who come to sacrifice will take some of the pots and cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite#14:21 Or merchant in the house of the Lord Almighty.</div>
