WordLive - Year One

DAY 75 OF 366

Prepare: Ask for God’s grace in all your relationships. A five-cow woman There is an island in Indonesia where a man who wishes to marry must pay his bride’s family with a gift of cows, up to five for a really first-class wife. Mike Pilavachi (‘I am a five-cow woman’, New Wine Magazine, Autumn 1998) tells the story of a man who paid five cows for a very unexceptional woman, much to his neighbours’ amusement. But he replied that she was worth it to him, and that, knowing five cows had been paid for her, she would be able to hold her head up high and act like a five-cow woman. Knowing our value God has given not mere cows but himself (v 25), and that sacrificial act has enabled the church to be the bride she should be; holy and radiant (vs 26,27). God cares for the church (v 29) and loves her as himself; indeed, they are united just like a husband and wife (v 31). Like the Indonesian woman, the church has yet to live up to the picture Paul paints. Knowing that we are valued makes it possible for us, as individuals and together as the bride of Christ, to live in confidence and allow God to work his changing power in us (v 27). Knowing our value in God’s eyes also means we no longer have to assert ourselves, leaving us free to submit to each other (v 21), as well as to God. Respond: Is there a situation in which I need to submit to others? http://www.wordlive.org/Session/Classic/2012-03-15
