Identity
The house is silent. He’s alone, staring at the wall. His face is so sad. He thinks no one would care if he just disappeared. He thinks he’s unloved, unwanted, but that’s not the truth.
She wants to distract herself, take her mind off recurring thoughts. She thinks she’s unloved and unwanted, but that’s not the truth.
Maybe you feel sad, struggling, lonely, or overwhelmed. You’ve stared at the wall or narrowed your focus to distract yourself from the pain in your heart, broken relationships, unrelenting stress, anger, addiction, illness, and death. It’s hard to imagine even God could say anything affirming, not when you think of all the times you’ve messed up, or all the times when you did nothing wrong and still got blamed, ignored, and even cursed.
But God knows who you are and what you’ve done. He knows your successes and failures. He knows your thoughts. He made you. And He offers you what the world is looking for: an opportunity to find a new identity, to see yourself in a completely different way. The Bible promises that all who receive Jesus, who believe in His name, have the right to become children of God (John 1:12). What you’ve done, or failed to do, doesn’t matter. What other people say and what you say and think about yourself doesn’t matter. You’re not unloved. You’re not unwanted. That’s not the truth.
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). God knows you, calls you to Himself, and has the power to transform you. He promises beauty instead of ashes, joy instead of mourning, praise instead of a spirit of despair, rebuilding instead of ruins, and growth instead of grief. The Bible says that if anyone is in Christ, that person is “a new creation: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). If you want a new identity, reach out to God and receive that gift from Him. He loves you. Your life can be beautiful.
