Faith & Love: A One Year Bible Reading Plan - Part 7Sample

Faith & Love: A One Year Bible Reading Plan - Part 7

DAY 19 OF 21

Philemon is the shortest letter from Paul but it still has a powerful message.

Who was Philemon? He was a Roman who became a Christ follower in Ephesus through Paul's preaching. Philemon’s slave, Onesimus, ran away and ended up in prison in Rome. There, he met Paul and Onesimus too became a follower of Christ and a dear brother of Paul.

Now the reason for the letter comes in. Paul knows Philemon and he knows Onesimus. Also, he is fully aware that the gospel and grace of God is powerful and can overcome anything. It can restore and heal any relationship, no matter what happens.

In the letter, Paul asks Philemon to take Onesimus back and forgive him. Moreover, he asks Philemon to free Onesimus from being a slave and even welcomes him as a brother into the family as in Christ we are all the same no matter what background we have.

In Philemon verse 17, he writes: “So if you consider me a partner, welcome and accept him as you would me.”

Sure, it would be easy to welcome Paul. But also someone who hurt you?

In Verse 20, Paul says: “Yes, brother, let me have some benefit and joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.”

In forgiveness and reconciliation, there is beauty and joy. However, it might be difficult.

Is there someone you need to forgive?

Is there a relationship you would love to see restored?

By the grace of God may you be able to take bold steps today and follow the voice of the Holy Spirit who will guide you in this.

May you live out God’s love and grace and experience deep joy and peace. God bless you.
