Face to Face With Jesus - a Lenten MeditationSample

Self-preservation is a trait common to every human being. The way our bodies are created and our brains are wired is to protect ourselves and keep us safe from any danger. So it’s no wonder that Jesus had to quiet down Peter’s natural tendency to play it safe. Jesus doesn’t stop there but goes on to talk about the cost of discipleship. He talks about the high price any follower of Jesus pays, maybe even with death, which will ultimately result in everlasting life. Many times our self-preservative tendencies hold us back from wholly committing to and serving God. They give us excuses from going all in when following Christ, and keep us on the sidelines living lukewarm Christian lives. Jesus is very clear about the reward system of heaven. He says that He will reward each person (when he comes again) according to what they have done.
Questions to ask yourself
What are you doing to serve God in the small portion of the world that you occupy?
Have you been trying to protect and preserve yourself by staying distant from Christ and his body? How can you change that?
