 <div class="label">14</div><div class="s1">Abram Rescues Lot</div><div class="p"> 1At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,#14:1 That is, Babylonia; also in verse 9 Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goyim, 2these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). 3All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Dead Sea Valley). 4For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.</div><div class="p"> 5In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim 6and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, as far as El Paran near the desert. 7Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who were living in Hazezon Tamar.</div><div class="p"> 8Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim 9against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar&#8212;four kings against five. 10Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills. 11The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. 12They also carried off Abram&#8217;s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.</div><div class="p"> 13A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre the Amorite, a brother#14:13 Or a relative; or an ally of Eshkol and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. 14When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. 16He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.</div><div class="p"> 17After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King&#8217;s Valley).</div><div class="p"> 18Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, 19and he blessed Abram, saying,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Blessed be Abram by God Most High,</div><div class="q2">Creator of heaven and earth.</div><div class="q1"> 20And praise be to God Most High,</div><div class="q2">who delivered your enemies into your hand.&#8221;</div><div class="m">Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.</div><div class="p"> 21The king of Sodom said to Abram, &#8220;Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22But Abram said to the king of Sodom, &#8220;With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, 23that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, &#8216;I made Abram rich.&#8217; 24I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me&#8212;to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. Let them have their share.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="p">39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, &#8220;My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 40Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. &#8220;Couldn&#8217;t you men keep watch with me for one hour?&#8221; he asked Peter. 41&#8220;Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 42He went away a second time and prayed, &#8220;My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 43When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.</div><div class="p"> 45Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, &#8220;Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Arrested</div><div class="p"> 47While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: &#8220;The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.&#8221; 49Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, &#8220;Greetings, Rabbi!&#8221; and kissed him.</div><div class="p"> 50Jesus replied, &#8220;Do what you came for, friend.&#8221;#26:50 Or &#8220;Why have you come, friend?&#8221;</div><div class="p">Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51With that, one of Jesus&#8217; companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.</div><div class="p"> 52 &#8220;Put your sword back in its place,&#8221; Jesus said to him, &#8220;for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 55In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, &#8220;Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.&#8221; Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Before the Sanhedrin</div><div class="p"> 57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.</div><div class="p"> 59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.</div><div class="p">Finally two came forward 61and declared, &#8220;This fellow said, &#8216;I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 62Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, &#8220;Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?&#8221; 63But Jesus remained silent.</div><div class="p">The high priest said to him, &#8220;I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 64 &#8220;You have said so,&#8221; Jesus replied. &#8220;But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.&#8221;#26:64 See Psalm 110:1; Daniel 7:13.</div><div class="p"> 65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, &#8220;He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66What do you think?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;He is worthy of death,&#8221; they answered.</div><div class="p"> 67Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68and said, &#8220;Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Peter Disowns Jesus</div><div class="p"> 69Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. &#8220;You also were with Jesus of Galilee,&#8221; she said.</div><div class="p"> 70But he denied it before them all. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re talking about,&#8221; he said.</div><div class="p"> 71Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, &#8220;This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 72He denied it again, with an oath: &#8220;I don&#8217;t know the man!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 73After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, &#8220;Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 74Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know the man!&#8221;</div><div class="p">Immediately a rooster crowed. 75Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: &#8220;Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.&#8221; And he went outside and wept bitterly.</div>

 <div class="p">1Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. 2So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.</div><div class="p"> 3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4&#8220;I have sinned,&#8221; he said, &#8220;for I have betrayed innocent blood.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;What is that to us?&#8221; they replied. &#8220;That&#8217;s your responsibility.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.</div><div class="p"> 6The chief priests picked up the coins and said, &#8220;It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.&#8221; 7So they decided to use the money to buy the potter&#8217;s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: &#8220;They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10and they used them to buy the potter&#8217;s field, as the Lord commanded me.&#8221;#27:10 See Zech. 11:12,13; Jer. 19:1-13; 32:6-9.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Before Pilate</div><div class="p"> 11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, &#8220;Are you the king of the Jews?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> &#8220;You have said so,&#8221; Jesus replied.</div><div class="p"> 12When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. 13Then Pilate asked him, &#8220;Don&#8217;t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?&#8221; 14But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge&#8212;to the great amazement of the governor.</div><div class="p"> 15Now it was the governor&#8217;s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus#27:16 Many manuscripts do not have Jesus; also in verse 17. Barabbas. 17So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, &#8220;Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?&#8221; 18For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.</div><div class="p"> 19While Pilate was sitting on the judge&#8217;s seat, his wife sent him this message: &#8220;Don&#8217;t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.</div><div class="p"> 21&#8220;Which of the two do you want me to release to you?&#8221; asked the governor.</div><div class="p">&#8220;Barabbas,&#8221; they answered.</div><div class="p"> 22&#8220;What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?&#8221; Pilate asked.</div><div class="p">They all answered, &#8220;Crucify him!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 23&#8220;Why? What crime has he committed?&#8221; asked Pilate.</div><div class="p">But they shouted all the louder, &#8220;Crucify him!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 24When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. &#8220;I am innocent of this man&#8217;s blood,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It is your responsibility!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 25All the people answered, &#8220;His blood is on us and on our children!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 26Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.</div><div class="s1">The Soldiers Mock Jesus</div><div class="p"> 27Then the governor&#8217;s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. &#8220;Hail, king of the Jews!&#8221; they said. 30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.</div><div class="s1">The Crucifixion of Jesus</div><div class="p"> 32As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33They came to a place called Golgotha (which means &#8220;the place of the skull&#8221;). </div>
