Smells tell stories. One smell tells you dinner is ready to come off the grill. Another smell tells you that roadkill is decaying badly on a hot summer day. It might even be the same kind of thing that died, but one smells like a meal and the other a public works problem.

So too with the death of Jesus. Paul is illuminating that the death of Jesus smells different ways to different people. A Disciple-Maker's vision needs to acknowledge this, and appreciate that to some, serving up Jesus smells like roadkill, while to others like you he’s a life-giving feast of nourishment. Try to understand alongside Jesus today, the disgust that some people have toward him. Different smells of the same Jesus.
