DAY 2 OF 7

Questions for Marriage

How do you make an informed decision about getting married? You ask questions of yourself and the person you want to marry.

For example, if your prospective mate’s behavior never changed, could you live with your relationship the way it is? You aren’t marrying the person you hope your spouse will become; you’re marrying who he or she is right now. There’s no guarantee your partner will ever change.

Here’s another question: Do you share the same values? If you plan to commit your life to someone, be sure you’re headed in the same direction. If you don’t, you’ll likely clash over matters of faith, money, or how to raise kids.

Also, ask if your family and friends agree this is a good person to marry. It’s natural to convince ourselves the person we love is wonderful. But what do the people closest to us say? Do they believe your fiancée is honest? Does he or she have integrity and good character? These are crucial traits for any relationship to be successful.

You could also ask yourself many other questions, and I recommend you do. The more insight you have as you prepare for marriage, the better.

Lord, give me insights about my future spouse as we explore important questions together. Keep our eyes open and our hearts pliable to Your ultimate best for our future.
