Humility Builds The Bible teaches us that pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall (Proverbs 16:18). Pride creeps in when you think that you can do everything on your own; that what you are and where you’ve reached is a result of your own effort, and that God has absolutely nothing to do with it. The minute you fail to recognize God’s role in your life, and stop depending on Him, you start operating in the flesh. The flesh can never accomplish what the Spirit of God in you can. That’s when the downfall begins. Jesus placed a very high value on humility. He said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all” (Mark 9:35 NIV). And He was the best role model. He was the Son of God, yet He humbled himself and came down to the earth as man, for man. He didn’t come to be served, but to serve. What greater example do we need? 1 Peter 5:6 (NIV) says, Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Now, this seems easier said than done. There is a key to ensuring that you never let success take control of you. That is, to accord everything to God. By acknowledging that His Spirit is the reason you’ve reached where you are, and by giving Him all the glory in your life, you keep that Spirit at work. If you are waiting for a promotion, whether in your workplace or any other area of your life, remember that humbling yourself before God brings riches, honor and life. Isn’t that a high reward for humility? Prayer Father, I choose to humble myself before You today. I know that without You, I am nothing. I give my life into Your hands. Come in and take control. Amen.
