Robert Clinton, professor of Leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary, believes that more than 70 per cent of church leaders do not ‘finish well.’ If that is true, then it’s not just the leaders but all of us - Christ-professing believers - that ought to walk this narrow path with caution, being watchful at all times. The Message Bible translation of Proverbs 13:12 says, Unrelenting disappointment leaves you heartsick. Despair and disappointment are subtle and devious emotions. If they are left unchecked, they can cause much damage in our lives. I am sure that every one of us has one area that we have real struggle with in prayer. It may be healing of someone in our family, a financial breakthrough, a marriage partner or the premature death of someone you loved. It is in these times, that if we don’t deal with the disappointment, we run the risk of our heart becoming sick. It becomes sick by either being upset with God or simply ceasing to believe in Him for the answer. The Bible also warns us that we must guard our heart, because it is from here that life flows. A sick heart will lead to a not-so-healthy life. There is only one way to deal with such a heart, and that is by having hope. Hope is defined as a joyful anticipation of something good. It is not some wishful thinking; it is a future certainty! Hope is our spiritual immune system. Jesus asked, “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8) Will He find us continuing in hope with an undying certainty? Prayer Lord Jesus, I bring every unanswered prayer in my life under hope. Help me to finish well. Let me be found with enduring faith when You return. Amen.
