Humility Attracts Grace Pride and haughtiness have consequences. You would have heard the saying, ‘Bigger the ego, harder the fall.’ God created this beautiful, angelic being, Lucifer, who led a heavenly choir in worship. But pride got in the way and got him expelled from heaven (Isaiah 14:12-15). Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, was raised up by God to be a mighty power over a great kingdom. However, pride cost him his throne for seven years (Daniel 4:28-33). Pride, and an arrogant spirit, step in, when we think we know more or are better than others. When this happens, we become blind to our own faults and refuse correction, or get easily offended when corrected. Pride glories in its own strength, looks down on others and shuts itself out of the grace of God. The opposite of pride is humility, which has no airs and holds no sense of superiority over others. We are told, in Philippians 2, to be of one mind, to esteem others better than ourselves, and to look out for the interests of others. Jesus is the best example for us to follow. He was and is God, yet He came to serve. His servant heart was demonstrated when He stooped down and washed His disciples’ feet. He humbled Himself and was obedient unto death, even death on the cross for us, sinners. “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6) Why would anyone want God to resist them? When we humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord, He will lift us up. That’s exactly what happened to Jesus. God exalted Him and gave Him a name that is above every name, and at that name every knee bows and every tongue confesses, that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Hallelujah! Declaration I humble myself before the Lord, and God lifts me up. He makes His grace, (His unearned, undeserved, unmerited favor) abound towards me.
