Year of the Bible: Part Ten of Twelve

DAY 23 OF 30

Giving Glory could lead to Grillin'

The church at Philippi had a special place in Paul's heart. They were the first church Paul planted in Europe. They were so excited to know about Jesus and were following him devoutly. They heard of Paul's incarceration and sent him money and a personal attendant to help him during his imprisonment. This generosity showed their gratefulness for the Gospel as well as the character God had given them.

Paul sent this letter of thanks for their generosity and reminded them to stand firm in their beliefs. He encouraged them to live their lives in a way that showed their awe at being chosen by God. Paul commended their commitment to Jesus and encouraged them to live unified.

Outside opposition makes the people of God stronger and more resolute in their faith. However, opposition from within the church can destroy fellowship, growth, and even belief. Paul knew that the human heart is bent toward selfishness and pride. He warned the Philippians to live for the glory of God, not their glory. He wanted to see the Gospel advance through the Philippian church, not hindered by ambition or disunity.

We are not living to satisfy ourselves or bring notoriety to our accomplishments. We live the fullest life when we bring glory to God!

Living for God can lead others to Him but also result in persecution. Our expectations may look different from reality, but God is on our team regardless of the outcome. We understand Him more deeply when we suffer, and that identification can be the super glue that holds us together. Even if circumstances are not going your way, God is for you, and Paul encourages the church to believe what God says.

Question: Do you believe that God is good and that He is for you? Do you avoid or embrace suffering? How have you seen suffering produce good fruit in your life? Do you live in unity with those around you?

Prayer: Lord God, please forgive me for ever participating in disunity. Please help me to do all I can to live at peace with others. Help me to point people to You. For those created in Your image who want to destroy Your church, please help them see Your goodness. Help me to recognize that You are good simply because You are who You are. Please remove doubt and help me trust You even during hard times.
