 <div class="label">17</div><div class="s1">Eating Blood Forbidden</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites and say to them: &#8216;This is what the Lord has commanded: 3Any Israelite who sacrifices an ox,#17:3 The Hebrew word can refer to either male or female. a lamb or a goat in the camp or outside of it 4instead of bringing it to the entrance to the tent of meeting to present it as an offering to the Lord in front of the tabernacle of the Lord&#8212;that person shall be considered guilty of bloodshed; they have shed blood and must be cut off from their people. 5This is so the Israelites will bring to the Lord the sacrifices they are now making in the open fields. They must bring them to the priest, that is, to the Lord, at the entrance to the tent of meeting and sacrifice them as fellowship offerings. 6The priest is to splash the blood against the altar of the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting and burn the fat as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. 7They must no longer offer any of their sacrifices to the goat idols#17:7 Or the demons to whom they prostitute themselves. This is to be a lasting ordinance for them and for the generations to come.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;Say to them: &#8216;Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice 9and does not bring it to the entrance to the tent of meeting to sacrifice it to the Lord must be cut off from the people of Israel.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I will set my face against any Israelite or any foreigner residing among them who eats blood, and I will cut them off from the people. 11For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one&#8217;s life.#17:11 Or atonement by the life in the blood 12Therefore I say to the Israelites, &#8220;None of you may eat blood, nor may any foreigner residing among you eat blood.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Any Israelite or any foreigner residing among you who hunts any animal or bird that may be eaten must drain out the blood and cover it with earth, 14because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, &#8220;You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Anyone, whether native-born or foreigner, who eats anything found dead or torn by wild animals must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be ceremonially unclean till evening; then they will be clean. 16But if they do not wash their clothes and bathe themselves, they will be held responsible.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

Do not follow their practices. 4You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the Lord your God. 5Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not dishonor your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; do not have relations with her.</div><div class="p"> 8&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your father&#8217;s wife; that would dishonor your father.</div><div class="p"> 9&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your sister, either your father&#8217;s daughter or your mother&#8217;s daughter, whether she was born in the same home or elsewhere.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your son&#8217;s daughter or your daughter&#8217;s daughter; that would dishonor you.</div><div class="p"> 11&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father&#8217;s wife, born to your father; she is your sister.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your father&#8217;s sister; she is your father&#8217;s close relative.</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your mother&#8217;s sister, because she is your mother&#8217;s close relative.</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not dishonor your father&#8217;s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual relations; she is your aunt.</div><div class="p"> 15&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law. She is your son&#8217;s wife; do not have relations with her.</div><div class="p"> 16&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your brother&#8217;s wife; that would dishonor your brother.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter. Do not have sexual relations with either her son&#8217;s daughter or her daughter&#8217;s daughter; they are her close relatives. That is wickedness.</div><div class="p"> 18&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not take your wife&#8217;s sister as a rival wife and have sexual relations with her while your wife is living.</div><div class="p"> 19&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not approach a woman to have sexual relations during the uncleanness of her monthly period.</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with your neighbor&#8217;s wife and defile yourself with her.</div><div class="p"> 21&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molek, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 22&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.</div><div class="p"> 23&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion.</div><div class="p"> 24&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26But you must keep my decrees and my laws. The native-born and the foreigners residing among you must not do any of these detestable things, 27for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. 28And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you.</div><div class="p"> 29&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Everyone who does any of these detestable things&#8212;such persons must be cut off from their people. 30Keep my requirements and do not follow any of the detestable customs that were practiced before you came and do not defile yourselves with them.  <div class="label">19</div><div class="s1">Various Laws</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: &#8216;Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.</div><div class="p"> 3&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Each of you must respect your mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am the Lord your God.</div><div class="p"> 4&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not turn to idols or make metal gods for yourselves. I am the Lord your God.</div><div class="p"> 5&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;When you sacrifice a fellowship offering to the Lord, sacrifice it in such a way that it will be accepted on your behalf. 6It shall be eaten on the day you sacrifice it or on the next day; anything left over until the third day must be burned up. 7If any of it is eaten on the third day, it is impure and will not be accepted. 8Whoever eats it will be held responsible because they have desecrated what is holy to the Lord; they must be cut off from their people.</div><div class="p"> 9&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.</div><div class="p"> 11&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not steal.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not lie.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not deceive one another.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not defraud or rob your neighbor.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight.</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your God. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 15&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.</div><div class="p"> 16&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not go about spreading slander among your people.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor&#8217;s life. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt.</div><div class="p"> 18&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 19&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Keep my decrees.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not mate different kinds of animals.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man sleeps with a female slave who is promised to another man but who has not been ransomed or given her freedom, there must be due punishment.#19:20 Or be an inquiry Yet they are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed. 21The man, however, must bring a ram to the entrance to the tent of meeting for a guilt offering to the Lord. 22With the ram of the guilt offering the priest is to make atonement for him before the Lord for the sin he has committed, and his sin will be forgiven.</div><div class="p"> 23&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;When you enter the land and plant any kind of fruit tree, regard its fruit as forbidden.#19:23 Hebrew uncircumcised For three years you are to consider it forbidden#19:23 Hebrew uncircumcised; it must not be eaten. 24In the fourth year all its fruit will be holy, an offering of praise to the Lord. 25But in the fifth year you may eat its fruit. In this way your harvest will be increased. I am the Lord your God.</div><div class="p"> 26&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not eat any meat with the blood still in it.</div><div class="p">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not practice divination or seek omens.</div><div class="p"> 27&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.</div><div class="p"> 28&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 29&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not degrade your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will turn to prostitution and be filled with wickedness.</div><div class="p"> 30&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 31&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.</div><div class="p"> 32&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 33&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. 34The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.</div><div class="p"> 35&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight or quantity. 36Use honest scales and honest weights, an honest ephah#19:36 An ephah was a dry measure having the capacity of about 3/5 of a bushel or about 22 liters. and an honest hin.#19:36 A hin was a liquid measure having the capacity of about 1 gallon or about 3.8 liters. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt.</div><div class="p"> 37&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Keep all my decrees and all my laws and follow them. I am the Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">20</div><div class="s1">Punishments for Sin</div><div class="p"> 1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Say to the Israelites: &#8216;Any Israelite or any foreigner residing in Israel who sacrifices any of his children to Molek is to be put to death. The members of the community are to stone him. 3I myself will set my face against him and will cut him off from his people; for by sacrificing his children to Molek, he has defiled my sanctuary and profaned my holy name. 4If the members of the community close their eyes when that man sacrifices one of his children to Molek and if they fail to put him to death, 5I myself will set my face against him and his family and will cut them off from their people together with all who follow him in prostituting themselves to Molek.</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute themselves by following them, and I will cut them off from their people.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the Lord your God. 8Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the Lord, who makes you holy.</div><div class="p"> 9&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. Because they have cursed their father or mother, their blood will be on their own head.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man commits adultery with another man&#8217;s wife&#8212;with the wife of his neighbor&#8212;both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death.</div><div class="p"> 11&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man has sexual relations with his father&#8217;s wife, he has dishonored his father. Both the man and the woman are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man has sexual relations with his daughter-in-law, both of them are to be put to death. What they have done is a perversion; their blood will be on their own heads.</div><div class="p"> 13&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.</div><div class="p"> 14&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man marries both a woman and her mother, it is wicked. Both he and they must be burned in the fire, so that no wickedness will be among you.</div><div class="p"> 15&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man has sexual relations with an animal, he is to be put to death, and you must kill the animal.</div><div class="p"> 16&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a woman approaches an animal to have sexual relations with it, kill both the woman and the animal. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man marries his sister, the daughter of either his father or his mother, and they have sexual relations, it is a disgrace. They are to be publicly removed from their people. He has dishonored his sister and will be held responsible.</div><div class="p"> 18&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man has sexual relations with a woman during her monthly period, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has also uncovered it. Both of them are to be cut off from their people.</div><div class="p"> 19&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Do not have sexual relations with the sister of either your mother or your father, for that would dishonor a close relative; both of you would be held responsible.</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man has sexual relations with his aunt, he has dishonored his uncle. They will be held responsible; they will die childless.</div><div class="p"> 21&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If a man marries his brother&#8217;s wife, it is an act of impurity; he has dishonored his brother. They will be childless.</div><div class="p"> 22&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Keep all my decrees and laws and follow them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out. 23You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them. 24But I said to you, &#8220;You will possess their land; I will give it to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey.&#8221; I am the Lord your God, who has set you apart from the nations.</div><div class="p"> 25&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;You must therefore make a distinction between clean and unclean animals and between unclean and clean birds. Do not defile yourselves by any animal or bird or anything that moves along the ground&#8212;those that I have set apart as unclean for you. 26You are to be holy to me because I, the Lord, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own.</div><div class="p"> 27&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death. You are to stone them; their blood will be on their own heads.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">Worship in the Earthly Tabernacle</div><div class="p"> 1Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. 2A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. 3Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, 4which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron&#8217;s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. 5Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.</div><div class="p"> 6When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry. 7But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. 8The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. 9This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. 10They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings&#8212;external regulations applying until the time of the new order.</div><div class="s1">The Blood of Christ</div><div class="p"> 11But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here,#9:11 Some early manuscripts are to come he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining#9:12 Or blood, having obtained eternal redemption. 13The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death,#9:14 Or from useless rituals so that we may serve the living God!</div><div class="p"> 15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance&#8212;now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.</div><div class="p"> 16In the case of a will,#9:16 Same Greek word as covenant; also in verse 17 it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. 19When Moses had proclaimed every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. 20He said, &#8220;This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.&#8221;#9:20 Exodus 24:8 21In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.</div><div class="p"> 23It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God&#8217;s presence. 25Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.</div>

 <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1">Christ&#8217;s Sacrifice Once for All</div><div class="p"> 1The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming&#8212;not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 3But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. 4It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.</div><div class="p"> 5Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,</div><div class="q2">but a body you prepared for me;</div><div class="q1"> 6with burnt offerings and sin offerings</div><div class="q2">you were not pleased.</div><div class="q1"> 7Then I said, &#8216;Here I am&#8212;it is written about me in the scroll&#8212;</div><div class="q2">I have come to do your will, my God.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;#10:7 Psalm 40:6-8 (see Septuagint)</div><div class="m"> 8First he said, &#8220;Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them&#8221;&#8212;though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9Then he said, &#8220;Here I am, I have come to do your will.&#8221; He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.</div><div class="p"> 11Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.</div><div class="p"> 15The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:</div><div class="q1"> 16&#8220;This is the covenant I will make with them</div><div class="q2">after that time, says the Lord.</div><div class="q1">I will put my laws in their hearts,</div><div class="q2">and I will write them on their minds.&#8221;#10:16 Jer. 31:33</div><div class="m"> 17Then he adds:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Their sins and lawless acts</div><div class="q2">I will remember no more.&#8221;#10:17 Jer. 31:34</div><div class="m"> 18And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.</div><div class="s1">A Call to Persevere in Faith</div><div class="p"> 19Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another&#8212;and all the more as you see the Day approaching.</div><div class="p"> 26If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30For we know him who said, &#8220;It is mine to avenge; I will repay,&#8221;#10:30 Deut. 32:35 and again, &#8220;The Lord will judge his people.&#8221;#10:30 Deut. 32:36; Psalm 135:14 31It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.</div><div class="p"> 32Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering. 33Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 34You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. 35So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.</div><div class="p"> 36You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 37For,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;In just a little while,</div><div class="q2">he who is coming will come</div><div class="q2">and will not delay.&#8221;#10:37 Isaiah 26:20; Hab. 2:3</div><div class="m"> 38And,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;But my righteous#10:38 Some manuscripts But the righteous one will live by faith.</div><div class="q2">And I take no pleasure</div><div class="q2">in the one who shrinks back.&#8221;#10:38 Hab. 2:4 (see Septuagint)</div><div class="m"> 39But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.</div>
