Power Play

DAY 7 OF 15

When you have a cough or sore throat, one of the best things you can do is to drink something that contains a small bit of honey. Honey works as a natural cough suppressant and provides almost instant relief just when you need it. You can almost imagine the honey soothing the irritated parts of your throat. It’s hard to believe that something so sweet could have such a big effect on something so painful.

The same can work with our words. We know that words can be powerful, with the ability to both heal and hurt. We can choose words to help a situation, or we can also choose words that just add to the pain and tension in the room. That doesn’t mean all your words have to be “sweet” when it comes to talking to people with power in our lives. There will definitely be times when the words we use need to be powerful in order to protect ourselves, protect others, or guide us through a tense situation. However, we can be reminded that we always have the choice of what words we’re going to use. The words themselves don’t have to be sweet; instead, we can work to make sure what we’re trying to say will be received in the best way possible.
