On the Flip SideSample

The first time a smartphone was able to be unlocked with a fingerprint, it felt so futuristic! What started with one type of phone exclusively being able to do so became a common phenomenon. A fingerprint is so unique that no two people alive have the exact same match. And it's this uniqueness that makes some of us tend to "follow the rules" and others be a little more rebellious. But what if I told you Jesus calls us to do a little of both?
During Jesus' day, there were rules that needed to be kept in order to prove yourself faithful to the Law. One of those things was that you couldn't work on the Sabbath, but Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath! Even though the Pharisees complained, Jesus chose to "break the rules" to show compassion to those hurting. By doing this, he shows us that the greatest thing we can do with our lives — regardless of others' expectations of us — is to show compassion.
Who can you go out of your way to show compassion to, even if it upsets other people?

About this Plan

Jesus wasn’t exactly known for telling people what they wanted to hear. Jesus didn’t give feel-good sermons. He flipped people’s ideas about God, the world, and themselves upside down — usually in uncomfortable ways. In this 20-day devotional series from Grow Curriculum, we'll compare how Jesus challenged the religious leaders and what God says in the Old Testament on what’s wrong or right, good or bad, and just or unjust.
